inshore salmon / trout

I have a 14ft boat and would like to get into the salmon, steelhead and brown trout on the lake huron. I know in the spring you can find these fish close inshore which would be ideal, I don't really want to go far out because of the boat size. Anyway I was wondering at what point do the fish start moving off shore and would it be worthwhile trip up north right now. I have some property in the Hammond bay area. I was thinking of putting in at the Ocqueoc river and trolling up and down the shore line.

Any help is most appreciated

not sure where hammond bay is but i'd say try it, there's still fish to be had in 15-40fow.

Hammond bay is roughly half way between cheboygan and rogers city.

got it! yeah, they were getting some atlantics and browns up there not long ago in the skinny water, either way you don't have to veture far offshore there to get into 60fow, you should be fine.

I find the type of boat to be more important than the length.

But seriously, watch the wind out there if you're venturing out any distance and go get 'em. I know Huron doesn't get as windy as Michigan but it can still whip up a squall in a flash.

My boat is a 14ft lund with 25hp motor. I won't be venturing to far I don't want to do a good but smaller impression of the perfect storm!

It's been a long time since I trolled the east side in my 14' boat. Those days, we only caught kings. Now, it's a mixed bag. Also, we have clear water with the zebra mussels. The drill used to be to start south of Lexington in April. Fish shallow in the morning and move to 30' - 40' as the sun gets higher. The fish would move north to Port Sanilac in April, then north to Harbor Beach in May and deeper.
