Gordon 'Butch' Boivin Named Partner in Conservation by NRC, DNRE Contact: Mary Dettloff 517-335-3014
Agency: Natural Resources and Environment

November 9, 2010
Gordon 'Butch' Boivin Named Partner in Conservation by NRC, DNRE - MichiganWaterfowl.com A St. Charles man who has volunteered several years at the Shiawassee River State Game Area was named a Partner in Conservation at a recent meeting of the Michigan Natural Resources Commission.
Gordon "Butch" Boivin of St. Charles is an avid waterfowl hunter and outdoorsman who has volunteered his time and talents to help with numerous projects at Shiawassee, including fabricating replacement parts for equipment at the game area, fixing almost anything that breaks and fundraising.
"Butch Boivin has been volunteering at Shiawassee for decades, and has taken a keen interest in helping the department with wetland wildlife conservation," said Department of Natural Resources and Environment Director Rebecca Humphries. "His dedication to Shiawassee is exemplary, and we are honored to name him a Partner in Conservation."
Boivin is an avid waterfowl hunter and outdoorsman who is active in the Shiawassee Flats Citizen and Hunter Association. He rarely misses a hunt drawing at Shiawassee, and sometimes enters the drawing just to get his card date stamped, said Doug Reeves, assistant chief of the DNRE Wildlife Division.
"Butch is one of the most enthusiastic supporters of Michigan waterfowl hunting I have met," Reeves said. "He has a knack for fixing almost anything, and has helped us keep Shiawassee in good shape, making it a top-notch place for waterfowl hunting."
Boivin, who used to operate a machine shop, has helped DNRE staff at Shiawassee with repairs to broken pumps, electric motors and heavy equipment. He has worked with the DNRE staff to identify projects that volunteers can do, and has helped organize volunteer work crews to assist with maintaining boat pullovers and marking routes to hunting zones. He also has played a major role in planning, organizing and providing updates at the annual Shiawassee Flats club banquet and fundraiser.
Boivin has even located donors to help pay for emergency repairs to equipment and infrastructure at the Shiawassee State Game Area, saving the department tens of thousands of dollars. Reeves recalled one recent instance where Boivin found an electric motor on an auction website that is identical to the ones used at Shiawassee. He contacted members of the Shiawassee Flats group and got approval to purchase it for $700 for the state game area to have as a backup. At the time, the game area had a motor in the shop being repaired that cost $3,200.
"Through Butch's support and efforts, Shiawassee is home now to more ducks, geese, muskrats, minks, herons, egrets and other wetland-dependent wildlife," Humphries said. "He has increased opportunity for all hunters through his volunteerism, and many of his projects go above and beyond the call of duty. He's a true champion of conservation and an ambassador for Shiawassee."

yep, i was just making a post about it when i seen yours, hehe. I just made a blurb about it on my blog too. Couldn't have gone to a more dedicated duck hunter/conservationist IMO...congrats Butch! He is one of the many reasons the SRSGA is where it is, Butch puts in a gazillion hours out there. I believe he started hunting it in the early 60's so hes got over 50 years hunting it and is one of the original founders of SFCHA in 1986.

Default doesn't look anything like you

That can't be your dad..... he's so much thinner than you are!

Congrats to Butch.
I'm sure it's well deserved and he should know that he has the appreciation of all of us waterfowlers for his tireless efforts.

Understatement of the year! Several of the "originals" at the flats do a ton of things there, but Butch is right up there with the best of them. Absolutely unbelievable what he does on his own time and money for the flats.
