Michigan not in top 10
Who has the best state tax systems? The 10 best states this year are Wyoming, South Dakota, Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, Texas, Delaware, Montana and Oregon.
Where did Michigan rank? In the middle of the pack overall, with the 26th best tax climate.
The shame of this mediocre grade is that with the exception of its infamous Single Business Tax, Michigan has a very competitive tax system. According to the State Business Tax Climate Index, Michigan has one of the best personal income taxes in the nation. With the exception of those states that don't tax wages at all, only two states have a personal income tax more hospitable to business growth.
Similarly, Michigan's wealth-based taxes on property and other assets are better than average, 20th best.
Single Business Tax onerous
As for the Single Business Tax, it ranks 49th, imposing a heavier burden on Michigan employers than any other state's principal business tax except New Jersey's onerous corporate income tax.
Almost everyone in the state, including both political parties, seems to agree that the Single Business Tax should be repealed or at least cut, but the predictable debate over how to "pay for it" has stopped decisive action.
How many jobs must flee before the state decides the price exacted by the status quo is even higher?
To sum up the portion of the article above, Michigan has pretty competetive taxes, except for the single business tax, which ranks 49th. This makes Devos's statement pretty true since he is talking about businesses.

Dealing skillfully with Congress, Reagan obtained legislation to stimulate economic growth, curb inflation, increase employment, and strengthen national defense. He embarked upon a course of cutting taxes and Government expenditures, refusing to deviate from it when the strengthening of defense forces led to a large deficit.
A renewal of national self-confidence by 1984 helped Reagan and Bush win a second term with an unprecedented number of electoral votes. Their victory turned away Democratic challengers Walter F. Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro.
In 1986 Reagan obtained an overhaul of the income tax code, which eliminated many deductions and exempted millions of people with low incomes. At the end of his administration, the Nation was enjoying its longest recorded period of peacetime prosperity without recession or depression.

The State should eleminate the SBT and we should look at ways to reduce the property tax. We pay for the loss of revenue in a number of ways one we need to look at wht we pay our legislators, judges, all our elected people.
we should revisit the cost of our prisons. the war on drugs is a poor joke costing us a fortune keeping people in prison whose crime is sell a few grams of drugs to support their own habit. The money might be better pent on rehad and education. with out the single buiness tax the State will attract new busness and create new jobs thereby providing dded revenue. We need to break the tax and spend thinking in this State and this country. We the people must demand of our elected officials fiscal responsiblity

I regret even mentioning Reagans name in the beginning of this post. I wasn't trying to bash. I was making the point that politicians fall short of their goals.
For the record, since this seems to keep running into the Reagan thing, this is the story I read for my first statement.
Enjoy.

Politicians have always played politics, this is what they do. I sincerly think that for the most part, they mean what they say. However after saying that, getting your agenda thru congress and the senate is not always possible. You have seen this with this president, and the republicans run the house and the senate. There has been nothing done that has not been fought for tooth and nail, and this is during war time. We have in the past had great presidents and some not so great, but I beleive they followed an agenda that they perceived as best for this nation. I know alot of you will disagree with me on this. But as a nation we still stand, and we are still strong, truly some must have done right.
This self destructive attitude towards our goverment, started in an era of great emotional turmoil. With the civil rights movement and Vietnam on the minds of every american. We have taught ourselfs to have little respect for or trust of our elected leaders. Yet we elected them.We have become a nation of what can we get from our goverment, what our goverment owe's us, to be honest we have become dependent.
We let the goverment take more and more liberties with our rights and wonder where they have gone .Laws which at one time were in the states hand now reside in washington. I do not blame the president or our elected officials, I blame us!
