GREAT FALLS (AP) – A bowhunter has been wounded during an encounter with a lone grizzly bear in northwest Montana.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks grizzly bear management specialist Mike Madel says the man is expected to recover from wounds to his head and legs.

Madel said the encounter occurred Saturday on private land in the Muddy Creek drainage about 20 miles northwest of Choteau.

He says the hunter came upon the grizzly in its day bed in dense, riparian cover along the Rocky Mountain Front while hunting elk with his brother.

Madel says the brothers had separated when the encounter occurred. The injured hunter was able to walk away after the encounter and call for his brother.

The encounter is still under investigation.

I can tell you I have been in SW Montana crawling through dead falls just at dusk. It is a scary feeling when you know your in Griz country and you can only see four feet in front of you. That year a guy was just attacked so I know my hunting partners were back to the truck long before dusk. Everyone of the roads in the area had signs that said this area frequented by grizzly bears.

My first trip to Montana was in the NW around LoLo. After I had taken my elk we took a horseback ride to the other side of our area to explore. Big snows moved in and we came across a fresh bear track. My guide said those were grizzly tracks and to be quiet. It had just crossed the trail before we got there. He said you could see the claws and they would be the only thing this high up that late in the year.

Just in......who needs bear spray! I've thought about this if attacked by a dog. I guess if you have to duke it out with a bear it works.

Hunter escapes attack by shoving arm down bear's throat

GREAT FALLS (AP) — A bow hunter in Teton County is recovering after he survived a grizzly bear mauling by shoving his arm down the animal's throat.

The Great Falls Tribune reports that 26-year-old Chase Dellwo was hunting with his brother northwest of Choteau on Saturday when he came face to face with a 350 to 400 pound male grizzly.

Dellwo says as the bear attacked him, he remembered an article his grandmother had given him saying large animals have bad gag reflexes. He shoved his arm down the bear's throat, forcing the animal to release him. The bear left. Dwello was able to find his brother, who drove him to the hospital.

He received stitches and staples in his head, some on his face, a swollen eye and deep puncture wounds on his leg.

Man shoots charging grizzly near Upper Whitefish Lake

OLNEY – This fall’s bear-human encounters continued to grow over the weekend, when a man shot and killed a charging grizzly near Upper Whitefish Lake north of Olney.

It’s the latest of several conflicts in recent days, including one west of Kalispell where an elderly woman died from injuries incurred when a black bear attacked her inside her home, and another near Choteau where a bow hunter staved off more serious injuries by ramming his arm down a grizzly bear’s throat during an attack.

A hiker from Wisconsin also reported being “grabbed and shaken” by a grizzly bear in Glacier National Park last week.

The latest encounter occurred while three men were walking down an old logging road Saturday “and smelled something decomposing below the road,” according to John Fraley, Region 1 spokesman for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

“Their dog ran down and encountered a bear, and then ran back toward the men with the bear on its tail,” according to Fraley. “They yelled at the bear, and then the bear charged one of them.”

Another in the group shot the grizzly with a high-powered rifle, Fraley said. The animal came to rest about 10 feet from one of the other men.

The men returned to their vehicle and reported the incident to the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office.

FWP game wardens Nathan Reiner and Wes Oedekoven responded, and found a large dead male grizzly they estimated to weigh 500 pounds, and an elk carcass that was cached by the bear nearby.

Fraley said FWP will forward its report to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agent in Great Falls, who will also investigate. State and federal officers have concurrent jurisdiction in investigations involving grizzly bear deaths, because grizzlies are on the threatened species list

I don't know the exact area, but one needs to be on the highest of alert in the 'greater Yellowstone' area. The bear concentrations are high, and they're not hunted. They have little fear of humans, possibly to the point where a rifle shot is food with some.

I'd treat it like deer hunting on Kodiak in AK, you may be hunting for deer, but load for bear. The other issue is one is usually quiet while hunting, making that surprise encounter a higher probability. It may not matter what you have if the bear is on you in seconds.
