Hey MM, I was just finished reading your article about "getting your stands spot on". I enjoyed it. I have buddies that ask my advice for a stand location for a buck. After listing all the "no-brainers", I always preach one that has made me most successful. Number one, get off the bait piles, when I hunted bait I always would see a buck 40-60 yards out, but never come in tight, until a walked around and figured it out. Heres what I found, and do now.

If you walk approximately 40-100 yards downwind of a food source on a well used deer trail, you will find a couple of slightly used trails intersecting the well used trail. I traversed 360 degress, and found the more slightly used trails intersecting a well used one. I set up a stand about 20 yards even further downwind at every intersection and hunted the wind directions. I now tag out. Young bucks still come straight in but the older ones are on those trails. I now swear by this tactic, and don't hunt anywhere else.

Mike, thank you for taking the time to read them. I'm glad you are enjoying them so far. I enjoy putting them together and its always good to hear that others are enjoying the effort.

I wasn't able to do as much shed hunting as I had planned this year (in part because of my growing family) and was a bit short on topics sometimes. I think February and March were a bit rough but hopefully you still find them enjoyable. My entry last week was basiclly the start of the season for me so hopefully from now through at least the end of hunting season I will have plenty of content to keep things fresh and interesting.

As for the habitat stuff I/we are pretty much learning as we go. I'll keep posting our projects and their results, good or bad, so hopefully you'll find some useful information along the way. If nothing else let us show you what not to do!!

    thanks again for reading!! Aaron

Hey MightyMouse, I have just started reading your blogs and started from the begining. I am a couple of weeks into it and can not wait to read the rest. I love how it is shaping up so far. I have no intentions to start my own blog due to the fact that just because it sounds good in my head does not mean it will come out comprehendable on the screen, lol. But I now have 40 acres that I live on and will be doing some habitat improvement to it and it seems that your blog will be part of my guidelines/goals on a much smaller scale. Thank you for putting in the time to do this and congrats on the new hunting partner. Mike

The firearms season is behind us here in Michigan. The heart of the rut is long gone and the muzzleloader seasons are under way or about to be under way (depending where you are at). It’s December and most would agree that the best days of the 2011 hunting season are now behind us and many hunters have already hung it up for the year.

I still have at least a few days in the woods left to look forward to as I will be heading north in a few days to enjoy a late season bow hunting...

My apologies for not getting a Whitetail Weekly entry posted up last week. I was up at the farm from November 10th through the 20th and getting an entry posted from my phone while up there can be a bit of a challenge.

This week’s entry will be a short one as I'm pretty tight on time this week. I’m home for two days to catch up on work before heading back to the farm on Wednesday to get back out in the woods. Next week I will be back on track and have a regular entry with updates on...

As I climbed into my stand Sunday morning I certainly had high hopes in regards to what I may see. It was November 6th after all and if there is a time of year where you “expect” to see some action this is certainly it. The rut is here, the does are starting to go into estrus and the bucks are really starting to move. It’s big buck time, and I was ready.

As I watched a few small bucks pass through over the course of the morning I began wondering where the big boys were hiding. It has...

Last week I set a plan that, based on what I had seen the weekend before, should have been money in the bank. The deer had been coming to rattling the weekend before so I was going to deploy a decoy this weekend to further entice the bucks to enter the plot as they responded to my rattling. All I needed was the right wind and the right weather, both of which started to come together as the end of the week approached. The weather was calling for a cold, crisp, morning with a south based wind and...

I talked last week about how much I enjoyed the camaraderie of hunting camp and while that is certainly true, the excitement and adrenaline rush that comes from seeing a good buck from the stand is still something I definitely enjoy.

That made getting back up to our property something I have been looking forward to since I pulled out of the driveway back on October 3rd.

As I started checking the weather for October 22nd and 23rd I became even more anxious to get back...
