We’ve had our cameras out since April and have gotten thousands of pictures so far this year. We’ve watched bucks start to sprout antlers, seen tiny fawns grow before our eyes from week to week and have seen all sorts of critters including raccoons, coyote’s, house cats, rabbits and squirrels to name a few. As the summer comes to a close, and the season draws near, it’s time to take a look at the who’s who of bucks on our property this season.
Usually we’d be happy to have one or...

With the season drawing closer the wheels in my head are spinning faster and faster every day. My mind is full of “what if” thoughts and my hunting partner and I spend a lot of time tossing “what do you think of this” questions back and forth. We actually have most of our stands already set and ready to go but there are always those last minute ideas and realizations that make you wonder if a different set up would work better.
During a recent conversation with Chris about a new...

As soon as spring breaks free of winters grasp we start thinking of which project to do first, where to put the trail cameras and how we are going to improve our food plots. It seems like there is a potential project for every weekend all summer long and in the end there are always one or two ideas that we just don’t have time for. It wasn’t long ago that the fall seemed too far off to even think about but suddenly it seems the summer has flashed past at a sprinters pace and we find ourselves heading...

I could tell you that I am a great hunter and woodsman that rarely, if ever, makes a mistake or a blunder and that I had some trouble coming up with material for this entry but my mom taught me long ago that lying wasn’t nice. I have had at least a “few” mistakes occur while out hunting that I thought would be good reading for others so I decided to put together a little blooper reel of hunting stories.
They may not have seemed funny at the time but now I can easily look back...

I’ve said this before, and I’m sure many out there feel the same way, but it is so much easier to get up at 5am when you’re going hunting than it is when you’re going to work. The same can be said for going up north vs going to work as well. This past weekend Chris and I decided to do a day trip up to the property on Saturday to take care of some work we didn’t get to the weekend before. The alarm went off early and, while my wife may have been a little less than excited, I was up quickly and ready...

If you have read any of my previous blogs this summer you have likely heard me discuss the bucks that we call Pinchy and Corners at some point along the way. These bucks have been walking past our cameras since back in May and by mid June it was obvious that they were going to be good bucks this year. Unfortunately if you’ve been following the blog you also know of the issues we’ve ran into while trying to get good pictures of these bucks.
After a card pull a few weeks back I dubbed...

Turning the calendar to August may not be all that significant for some people but when I see August first on the calendar it’s a pretty exciting day. I figure August first is the half way point between the start of summer (June first) and the start of hunting season (October first). In my mind from here on out we are running downhill towards opening day and, as someone who loves to bow hunt, that is a great feeling to have.
The arrival of August also means it’s time for me to break...

I was on my way out to sit and watch an alfalfa field for the evening when I looked across the pasture and saw some dark shapes moving through our canola plot. I grabbed the binoculars and the first image my eyes focused on was a buck, a buck that I instantly knew was the one we’ve been calling Corners all summer. He was wide, probably 18-20 inches wide, and as he faced away from me his rack was wider than his body. He sported good looking G2’s and G3’s that were plenty tall enough to be easily...

As we entered the cabin and began taking off our boots and putting away our bows I remember listening to Chris as he told of the deer he had seen during that evenings hunt. When he had finished describing his exciting evening the attention turned to me and I was asked “what did you see tonight?” My response was short, but not so sweet. “Nothing” I said, “there are no deer out there when I’m there. I haven’t seen anything all year.”
It was barely even late October and I was already...

The heat and humidity of the last few days is a strong reminder that summer is really just getting started. There will surely be many more “dog days of summer” before we get to the “deer days of fall” but it’s never too early to get your October game plan in motion.
With the addition of our new Plateau Plot an area that was formerly an open grass field is now a food source and deer usage has changed accordingly. Right now we are seeing a bunch of deer, including at least one quality...
