Why you shouldn't shoot a skunk

Posted 09-01-2008 at 08:16 PM by Kelly Johnson

Back yard of Detroit Suburbia.
Life is good, kids asleep, neighbors over for a cocktail and little suburban backyard fire pit.
All is right with the world.

And here he comes.

Everyone’s a little buzzed. Guy from 3 doors down says ” Dude…$20 says ya can’t tag the stink kitty with the Rytera.”

Are you freakin’ kidding me?

Never, and I mean NEVER challenge Kelly after Jimmy’s been visiting.

After a bit the sun came out and we were treated to even more incredible views.

Ran the boat 30 miles up to Au Sable Lighthouse and it was enveloped in fog still.

www.whitetailhabitatsolutions.com HEY! I'm on Facebook too-myself, and my company.

First off, there are so many ways to make deer beds, and in my experience they don't necessarily relate to specifically buck, or doe beds. Instead, the habitat and location,...

"Thin Is In"

-Blog 1/30 www.whitetailhabitatsolutions.com Check out WHS on Facebook too!

A question I often get asked is, “What is your favorite food plot shape?” To me, there is no real obvious “one size fits all” answer. Most often the lay of the land and topography will dictate what is needed, but really the one common denominator is as long as possible…and as THIN as possible....

“If I could pay the fee on my SW WI lease and be able to hunt on my own, I would.”
-Me, 2002

Looking back, how sad that statement was. It wasn’t that I didn’t like hunting with my family and buddies, it was just that I loved hunting mature bucks so much, as a...

Complex Parcel Design III

Bedding areas and food plots are two habitat improvements that you most likely hear about the most. The perfect deer bed, the perfect planting… “Perfect, perfect, perfect”. So many strive for perfection in the creation of a habitat feature that...

A Hunt To Remember!

Posted 04-26-2011 at 08:45 AM by dsconnell
Updated 04-26-2011 at 11:17 AM by dsconnell (Was not finished)

The date was Friday, April the 22nd, 2011 and me and my little girl Ally were headed out on her first turkey hunt with a good firend of mine from the hill country of Southern Indiana.

Upon arrival at the cabin it was raining and thunder with severe weather warnings and flood warnings ahead of us and when I really had my doubts about the hunt, she was right there helping me unpack and laying her clothes out for the next morning! So I asked " Ally, are you sure you want to go out...

Venison 101. A Culinary guide

Posted 06-29-2008 at 08:32 AM by Kelly Johnson

I thought I’d pass along some tips that may help get the most enjoyment after you tag the big one

First we’ll talk about Venison.

Venison is lean. Made even leaner by the fact that the fat is not pleasurable at all because it coagulates at a much lower temp than farm raised animals.
What that means is if you add venison fat to a sausage recipe when you eat it and take a drink….it turns to Vaseline in your mouth. So….trim all the fat off. We can add a more palatable...

Food plots going gang busters in 08

Posted 07-08-2008 at 11:34 PM by Steve

Often in the past, I thought either I was a bad farmer or that the deer never visited my food plot.

It turns out that the deer visit my plots several times a day and eat heartily. So the deer where there eating and pulling all the Rye out of the field and I never knew it until I put in a deer cam to monitor things.

I have learned so much about deer behavior by...

Opening Weekend(at least for Me)

Posted 09-26-2011 at 08:03 PM by Daveldman (Michigan Outdoor Experience)
Updated 09-28-2011 at 02:19 PM by Daveldman (new info)

Usually, the first weekend I get to head into the woods is the woodcock opener. That again held true this year, and it was probably the best weekend of bird hunting I have ever had. The grouse were jumping in groups of 2, 5, and even 6 from one tree. It was amazing. My shooting was not so amazing. Fortunately, birds in the bag aren't all that make up a good weekend of bird hunting. The birds were still hanging in coveys, which makes for some action in the woods. I rarely find birds in the...
