The wife and I headed to PH for the first smelt fishing trip of the year. we dropped our nets in the water just below the bridge, just before dark. We then noted we forgot to bring a cooler or bucket  So off we went to The store and purchased a cheap foam cooler. we got back to the nets just after dark and pulled the first net. Results est. 100 smelt. The second net was set deeper and got nothing . We moved both nets to the top and the action remained steady for the 2 hrs we fished. each pull popped 30 to 80 smelt. Needless to say a short time later the wife was on her way back to the store to buy a second cheap cooler. We ended up filling both 3/4 full and now have enough smelt to last the summer and make me hate my self tommorw cleaning them. :) :D Great night :D
The runs were constant I used a flashlight before we left and there were schools all up and down the seawall. It would have been a great night for guys that just use dip nets. photos posted below.

Awesome JOb on the smelt Ed,
My handlining results on the river were far from stellar. The current in that river is crazy, makes boat control very difficult

Does anyone have any links or pictures of smelt nets(cages)? I was thinking about heading out there tonight, but the only nets I have are the ones with handles and the small wire hoop nets. Would the ones with handles even be usable by the wall?

That just leaves more for the rest of us. Glad to see another Warren resident doing good on the water.
I am wondering if you and the rest of the group think that the run will still be going next weekend. I was not planning on going to the cabin so a smelting trip could be in order. Otherwise I might have to go look for some carp.

Aaargghh, trying to remember seasons and today's date. Getting to be way to much to remember in our everyday lives.
