Any turkey hunters out there? If so, how are you doing so far? I know today is the opener, but I wanted to get a thread started. Ruth and I won't make it to the woods until Wed.

I did some scouting on Monday. I roosted some nice birds and let Sarge know where they were. I'm waiting to hear from him to see if he got one. I'm heading up Thursday night. My nephew is going. First time he has ever been hunting. I'll post the results next week.

Do any of you turkey hunters know if turkeys keep the deer away? I havnt seen a deer in 3 days but the turkeys seem to be everywhere. Every stand location I choose I have turkeys squaking and ruffling around, boy do those birds make a lot of noise, but the deer action has shut off.

Well Sarge, I'm all eyes, let's see the story. I hope you and Ruth had a great hunt. :)

But sadly no birds. We went out Wed. morning and got a little bit of a late start, so were hurrying to get set up. We got too close to the birds in that hurry mode, and spooked a few. When they came down they were too far away to shoot. Ruth got a good look at them flying down but didn't get to shoot. She was totally bummed. Not so bad as to spoil the outing but disappointment just the same. That evening and the next morning, we didn't get another look at them. Same thing Friday morning. By then there were 5 of us, and Stalker spread us out through the woods and Our nephew got to watch a large flock roost. He was excited, he's never hunted anything before and appeard to be having a really great time. Saturday morning, Lois, Stalker's wife, got one bird, and all the rest of them flew out of range as they came down. Ruth and I had to start packing the camper to go home in hopes of getting it done before the downpour and failed anyway.
No birds, but great times in the wild and really good times with our fellow hunters. (and huntresses.) Ruth has her own login now, so she may add some thoughts.
Thursday evening I had an awesome hunt! I took the climbing stand out to where I knew the deer had been and where I thought the turkeys would come to eat. I called with a few clucks and about 5:30 I counted 28 come in! I stood up when the lead hen went behind a tree but all the rest spotted me! Live and learn. I'm not going to shoot another turkey until I do it with my bow so I may have a LONG wait ahead of me but you learn a lot more this way!

My wife got bitten bad by the turkey hunting bug. What did I get started? I was suppose to leave for Colorado Wed morning to go elk hunting. One of the guys can not get away until Wed evening. So my wife says since you already have the day off why don't we go turkey hunting in the morning. This would all be great if we could walk out our back door and go hunting. However it is over an hour to the hunt site. I started to put up a little resistance to the idea of trying to go hunting the day I was leaving for a big trip, I got one of those I can't believe you will not do this for me looks. So at 10:30 last night I was making calls to have our kids picked up at different locations and watched. I wonder if I should take her deer hunting? NAAA!! Ok maybe next year. I am a very blessed husband.

Well, Stalker, I'm becoming quite envious of Mrs. Stalker's experiences of not only seeing turkeys in the woods, but already bringing home a couple.
I may need to head out to the turkey woods by myself. We were planning to leave straight from work today, but Sarge is fighting off the "lung crud" and not feeling quite to to par . . . I still would like to at least get a chance at a shot.
By the way, when are we going to get an elk story from you?
I didn't get to see the pictures or hear the whole story yet.

May you be blessed with a field full of triple bearded toms.
Welcome to the site Ruth. We'll expect a full report when you return.;)

Mrs Stalker and I had a discussion this morning about wanting to go turkey hunting this week-end. We need to clean the basement out so we can put wood in for the winter. She thought we could go turkey hunting next week-end. However next Friday is the last day. I may leave work a little early next Friday and try to make a last day success story.
THE ELK HUNTING TRIP
Yes I was successful. I shot a 6 X 6 on Wednesday the 24th at 10:35. They didn't actually put him on a scale. The processor said he was between 700 and 800 pounds. I took him with a Ruger 77 30-06 at 125 yards.
Our group of 6 took a total of 5 mule deer and 3 elk. I didn't get my mule deer app. in before I decided I was going so I didn't have a mule deer tag.
It was a great trip overall. It was a totally different hunting experience for me. The terrain and vegetation is so completely different. We hunted a 30,000 acre ranch. The game is free ranging so there is no guarantee that you get anything. We had 3 guides for 12 hunters, so we had to learn fast. You listen and watch and then pray.
I have alot of pictures but no scanner. I'll try to get some posted.
The meat is great. It is milder than venison and very tender. The summer sauage I had made is the best I have every eaten.
Have a blessed hunt and I will be praying for Sarge to get well and get in the woods.

I'm headed up to Gaylord this weekend to combo bow/turkey hunt.....I'll give a report when I get home on Sunday!!
Well..... I've had the turkeys within shotgun range 5 times now but just can't get a shot off with my bow. I've got a few more days to go and Thurs. and Fri. I don't have any school so I've got another chance to get one in the morning!
