 Anyone have any suggestions or tips on where to catch some smallmouth in Saginaw bay. I thought I might head there on opening weekend. I've been on the bay a few times but not had much luck.

I don't know very much on bass fishing in the bay, little bit on east side. I know that they catch largemouth and occasional smallie around sebewaing area. They get into more smallies farther you head up toward bay port. we're going upto county park in sebewaing Thursday, staying till memorial day.

I was told by a friend of mine that there may be some good fishing around that area. Thanks for the input Slim Jim.

Might want to consider the Saginaw River instead of the Bay. River Smallies are pretty plentiful compared to the bay in my opinion. I've had 60 plus bass a day on the river with a number of real decent ones caught. Plenty of structure compared to the bay, that you should be able to get on top of them pretty quick.

Little D,

I'd try from PA to lighthouse park. If thats not too far to drive. Lots of smallies all over the area. Breakwall at caseville can be good, and have caught them wading off burnt cabin point. Haven't fished grindstone or lighthouse park yet, but hear its great, plan on heading that way soon myself. Try pm'ing Jeremy L. he could probobly give you some good spots to try.

I used to fish the Bay Port area before the water was low. Be very careful of the rocks at mud creek. I used to take a push pole with me and had to use it a few times to get unstuck. I also took some waders, had to get out and push the boat off a mud bar also. All that was before elect. trolling motors. If you have never been there before used your elect. trolling motor and be very careful. I know I have lost a lower end once and know people that live there all there lives and duck hunt there and sometimes they hit something and lost there lower end. SLOOOOOOOOOOOWW is the word. Good luck and let us know how you did. PS Bay dog is right with his River tip.

I have always done well for just about any species that swims in Saginaw in the Charity Islands area. A football head jig and pig worked over the rocky bottom will take smallies all day long. Chug bugs are a gas to fish during low light periods. Use a braid to help eliminate bite offs.:)

I meant to get out there last year, but never made it. Thanks for the info.

HMMMM how about late June? I have to get this muske bug tamed before I start road trips. Besides, I hate fishing bass when they are still bedding, open season or not. :)

Ok get with me. Bed fishing for Bass debate has been around for a long time. DNR report on the lakes that are in MI that are open to C & R looks like there has been limited damage done if any, to bed fishing. I don't know and don't think no one else knows for sure. I can do it or not.

littledeke; Hope I didn't scare you away from Bay port. If you never been to the Charity's you better be very careful there also.

HMMM You have me thinking. Is it my imaganation, or does bass fishing on Halloway SUCK since it was put on the early season C&R list? Or has my ability to find bass on Halloway degerated?

I knew you would come back with Holloway. Holloway has always sucks for me. Don't get me wrong, I've done good there but not often. I have fish it for bass in the late 50's and it has almost always suck for me. I think you should target the small moth bass there now. Do you remember the tournament they had there maybe 15 years ago? I think 2 bass won and there was not many bass caught something like 75 boats and maybe 8 bass was brought in total. There was more tournaments like that there also. I think the DNR picked that lake as one of the lakes to try C&R because it couldn't hurt an already hard to fish bass lake.

One thing for sure is that I will get out, although the weather for this weekend doesn't look promising. I'll let you know how I did.

There was alot of bass boats out there too. Landed 2 walleyes, first one was a small one, second was 17 in.

Don't know about that.

Bed fishing is mostly site fishing and the water color at Holloway is not to conducive to site fishing. That might be another reason for the DNR to pick Holloway.

Sorry for jumping on your post littledeke. I'm out of here.
