What are some of your favorite baits to run when handlining? Which do you like to run on top and bottom?

origenal rapalas, #7,9 and 11's , firetiger, gold andblack, blue and clowns, on upper and lower leads early in the year also will run pencil plugs at night early in the year. In the summer #7 and#9 rapalas on the top leader and #4 or #5 flatfish in blue silver, gold black and silver black, tipped with a piece of crawler on the bottom lead.

I like to run the small spoons like the stinger scorpions. Also at times I will and a small 1/2-1" piece of crawler. And another thing that has worked well for me is cutting off the tail of a yellow twister and hooking it on the rear treble of a 9 or 11 rapala.

There was a time when it was "pencil plugs" only at night and "walleye spoons" only during the day. As we can see times have been a'changing and the lures, especially the daytime ones, are different.
My favorite color combo is a black with a dark red. Seems to work especially well on cloudy days or nights.
Whatever you choose, remember to buy 2 identical lures. If you find one that works great you are sure to loose it. This way you will have a replacement.

Z-Plugs!
I mentioned this thread and the Z-Plugs to a buddy. Intesting story on how Zola (not sure of the spelling of his name) started cutting and then painting this lure.

Alex,
I'd love to hear it sometime. I was lucky enough to own Steve Zola's old boat and went to his house to pick up some Z-plugs before he passed away.
A true gentleman.

According to Moose Zola only cut "cup noses" on his Z-plugs which he started off calling Z-palas. Then Moose started talking about how Zola perfected chrome on wooden pencil plugs. In the garage I have some pencil plug blanks that were supposedly cut by Zola way back in the day.
It turns out I do not have the knack for painting lures. I can reload all my handgun ammo for target, competition, and hunting but I cannot paint. One of these days I will get into that corner of the garage and sort all the blank lures and blades out and put them on the market.
Well if it's salmon I like Monkey Puke. I also started making my own lures, I see if I can get some picks, it's something fun to do when the weather bites my as$. One of the best Walleye lures I gots was from a garage sale probably ten years ago, I picked up a tackle box full of lures from this lady for $10.
