I went out yesterday for some gills. I caught 14 of em'. 6 were over the 6" mark and i caught one nice 7" perch. They were all caught on a little yellow spider (fly) i just tied it to my ultra-lite set up and casted it as far as i could and let it sink then throw it there again until i caught all the worthy one's in the area. Thou i was out only for about 35 minutes it still was fun! I'll be heading out today to catch these bull's i seen, there all over 7"+. i'll be keeping them for i nice lil' dinner! :corkysm55
Oh yea i make my own replica of the fly i use but these are pink. I can sell them if any one wants one, for about .25-.75 each... I'll give instructions on hw to use them. I'l make a few and try them today (thats all i'll use) take pictures of the fly and the fish.. so if anyone's interested PM me :) .

I might be interested in some flies that you have made. Take a pic of them and post or email to me. I wasn't able to get out yesterday but plan on going out tonight. I have another question if you don't mind. In your opinion what is the best time of day to catch gills? I have tried only after work from about 8-9:30ish. Do they bite at night(dark)? Thinking of trying 5-6:30am before work sometime. Let me know what you think? Also, what do the beds look like. Some people have told me they are the size of a dinner plate. But the beds that I thought I ran into were maybe 3' by 3'. I could see all the small gills in the bed, then some biggins cruising through and around there. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks, nice post, keep it up!!!!

Frozenfish, i'll post the picture of the fly!
I find them usually when ever i fish for them anytime of the day. you just have to know what to use. Live waxworms or small portions of a night crwaler work great anytime. Yes, the bulls come out at night usually, if you find the right spot, look for deep sopts with cover, just vertical fish and watch your rod tip closely. as for the beds there right about the dinner plates. Just look for a circle of rocks that dip in sort of and a big fat gill sitin' around or hovering over it. I find the fish hovering over the beds the easiest to catch do to that they hit the bait just beacsue your invading there space. If you have any more questions keep em' comin'. I dont mind.

Regarding time of day, the last two nights in the Ann Arbor area, the big gills were hanging in slightly deeper water and were very fussy until the last 30-40 minutes before dark, when they moved in shallower and got aggressive. That behavior should change once the water warms up some and they start moving onto their beds.

What's the FOW (foot of water) they would most likely be bedding at?

Not very deep! maybe from about 1' to about 5'. 5' might be pushing it but i'm not sure. I just know there easy to get from a dock. or like i said verticall fishing. if you see a fish in a bed, lucky you! once you find one there's usually more around and you dont have to work to much to catch them!

Usually I have found the best gill action is from sun up for a few hours, and then the last few hours prior to sunset. I don't think that they will bite after it gets dark. When they are on their beds, they ususally bite all through out the day.
Good luck,

I do some of my best fishing in the summer time for the two hours after the sun goes down using a popper and a casting bobber. The bigger gills seem to hit after sundown. If it's too dark you have to fish by ear shich takes some getting used to but it's an absolute riot.

At night skip the bobber. Let it sink slowly and you will feel them grab your hook. I find best times are around sunrise and right before sunset. Their nests arent always that big i have seen some pretty small ones. Once on their nests they will hit ANYTHING and if you throw them back they'll probably hit again.

I went fishin for some gills today on a small pond by my house. They were all caught in shallow water under a bobber. I caught five on a little rubber spider and a few others on worms. Also got a 20" carp that I caught with a little 5 foot pole that I was using. Almost snapped the thing in half. Hopefully I can go tommorow and catch some more.
