Tried the gills again late last night. They are just starting to hit the top of the water where I am fishing. I had one on lost it, had about 5 or 6 stirkes. One even went at my bobber. I am a newbie to fishing for gills. Anybody else notice it hasn't really turned on yet? I was using an UL with a shamano 1000, 6# test. I had a clear bobber about 3ft up with a small orange/brown spider. Maybe I wasn't using the proper bait? This is a rig I learned from this site. It almost produced last night, I just think that it may be a litlle early right now??? There was nothing hitting top water. The water couldn't have been any more calm. Any thoughts????? We also tried bobbers and worms, nothing. The other rig seemed to be the key, just not taking.

As the guy said this past week on Michigan Out of Doors, "I just want to be a happy hooker" LMFAO:lol:

That rigging will produce!

Also try a black gnat, or black ant tipped with a waxworm. Great producer.
We need some warmer weather here in Michigan to get them active.

Good luck!

I was out over the weekend near Chelsea. Ended up keeping 11 nice gills (8" +) Caught them all on a bead head prince nymph. I was in a float tube, and even brought my ultra lite with me, but had no hits on the worm and bobber combo. They should be bedding in the next few weeks, if it ever warms up.

This weather is keeping the water cool. They will be on the beds heavey soon. I have seen the smaller gills bedding a bit, but the big ones will need a bit warmer water. I am going to give it a try this week sometime.
Try changing color of your spider. White is good, unless you have allot of Cotton Wood floating around. I think they get confused and end up eating a few of those cotton floaties..than they shy away from white.

Great advice guys, Thank you very much!!!!!!!! I don't know what it is, all of a sudden I just started talking about gills after the ice fishing season and decided to target them on softwater. I can't wait to get into a few and have a nice dinner with all the ones over 8'' I catch. Keep what you can eat is the rule, right? Thanks again, soon as I get into them I will post my pics. What a great great site!!!! :woohoo1:

Throw back that 9.5''....eat a 7 :)

them 7's taste the best anyway, like Lays potato chips.....time to break into the winters' stash for dinner.

i went out this morning and stumbled accross a whole mess a gills. I kept a dozen for tonights dinner. it was like a feeding frenzy, they were hitting on every cast. if i had a fly rod it would of been like heaven but i still did all right on crawler bits. too bad my fishing buddy had to work or we both could have had dinner, but he bailed on me. imagine that someone wasting a perfectly good day when the bite is on wanting to go to work. hes a sick person.

Frozenfish,

I'll try the gills around by me and see what there hitting on. I see your in waterford maybe a get together for some gills. i may be 15 but i have alot i mean alot of exp. with gills. Who was it that you were with last time you went fishing with? was it shane? anyway. IDK if you did or not but try a tear drop tipped with a live wax worm and use a ice fishing bobber.(makes small fish seem bigger by how much they take the bobber down.) and the small bobber increases sensitivity. Well try that and i'll go out today and see what's up with these gills. oh yea i'll be using a fly. its a yellow fuzzy thing that has spider legs. Its called Bluegill bug or somthing of the sort. But scince your using a rubber spider i'll give that a whirl as well.

if i do good with the gills would anyone want to do a get together?
I'll make a new thread.

Thanks for the offer Shane. I fish with Jigawhat on Elizabeth Lake. Maybe sometime would could have a get together. I have a feeling that they are going to turn on anyday now. Hoping to get out tomorrow and check them out. I will post any questions that I have here. I enjoy reading your threads, so keep up the good advice.
