When fishing the river with all the snags sometimes I straighten out the wire hook on my jig. When I bend the hook back with pliers I always turn my head away even while wearing glasses. Imagine if a little piece of wire went right through and into your eyeball. YUCK!

OUCH !!!!
Needless to say, I didn't watch the whole video. The second it started and I saw what it was I aborted immediately. I'm mighty squeamish when it comes to the eye area and injuries.

Holy crap, my eyes are still watering.
Last year a couple of buddies and I were fishing off of a ten foot or so wall into a river. Well, one of my buddies became snagged up on some wire or fencing in the river and gave a couple of quick tugs and it came loose drilling him straight in the eye. Well we ended up driving 20 miles to an emergency room and then another 60+ to an Ophthalmologist who was kind enough to open in the middle of the night. He ended up being ok, but boy he was lucky, he could have lost vision or lost his eye. Lesson: at least look away when trying to become unsnagged in shallow water. That was pretty scary.

Also be careful if using bungee cords or rubber straps when fishing/ outdoors in general. My canoe seats have bungy cords that attach them to the canoe. As I was removing one of the seats from the back of my car, I felt resistance. When I turned to see what the issue was, the cord that was hung up let loose, with the rusted metal hook catching me square in the right eye. I ended up in the Bay City emergency room, I thought I was going to lose the eye for sure. The eye doctor (OPTO something) said he sees more injuries from bungee cords than anything else and that I was one of the lucky ones. The doctor advised to never, ever use cords or straps if it can be avoided.

Lost most of the vision in my left eye due to a stupid accident at school in 10th grade (1984). I was an innocent by stander. Suffered a lacerated cornea, split pupil, and nerve damage to the pupil. 5 hours of micro surgery to "repair" it. Now, it barely dialates and sunlight drives me nuts. I NEVER go fishing without glasses. Heck, I rarely venture outside during the day without sunglasses on because after a short period of time it hurts from sqinting.
Moral of the story...and I can't stress this enough: protect your eyes at all costs. I cut nothing, screw gun nothing, and sand nothing around the house or work without safety glasses on. Even my polarized fishing glasses are Z-87 safety rated.
Oh, and that link is not work freindly for those of you dealing with firewalls at work. Comes up as Porn!! I'll probably get fired now....:tdo12:

Jig,
IT is in the eyeball itself. well he had a doctors appointment yesterday and he is going to have another surgery on June 17th, second day of summer vacation!!!
He was climbing a pine tree like he has in the past hanging tree stands with me, and looked up for the next branch and a broken off branch punctured his eye, just under the cornea(the wound looks like an underlined V ) he lost some of the jelly in the back of the eye. the next surgery is to remove some blood that didn't disapate inside the eye. The good news is no Cornea/Retena damage.

I can truely feel for your son... I know exactly what he is going thru. I hope everything turns out well for him... he's lucky there was no cornea damage... my cornea has a scar running straight across it, dead center in my field of vision. Sometimes it really throws off my depth perception... like when trying to tie a knot in monofiliment!! I usually end up with my eye closed to do it... tongue haning out, REALLY concentrating... ;) :D
Who did his surgery? I ended up at Grand Rapids Opthamology clinic for therapy afterwards... On Michigan Avenue near the Beltline.

U of M Kellogg center.
They are the best. at least in my eyes. The docs didn't think they could save the eye from the puncture wound but they did it.
Heck I couldn't sleep for like 2 weeks after he did it, all I would kept dreaming is him standing under the tree screaming and holding his face and I knew what was going to be under his hands i just knew. then he pulled his hands away and screamed to me is my eye still there Dad???? is it still there??????
DAD CAN FIX JUST ABOUT ANYTHING HE HAS GO WRONG BUT NOT THIS!!!

wow.... i don't know what to say... I feel for both you guys and especially your son, I am squirming here just reading the last few posts...
Thanks again for sharing your stories, fellas, good luck with the upcoming surgery and God bless.
Its tough to find a silver lining, but the 585 (and counting) views on this thread will hopefully save a few unfortunate incidents like this from happening again...

I remember the blood in the eye thing... took literally MONTHS for mine to clear up. The white part of my eye was white... the part that's supposed to be colored was kinda yellowish... looked awful! They were considering going in a second time but decided to let it ride and see what happened... I spent the entire summer between 10th and 11th grades basically blind in one eye... and so very sun sensitive that I could barely go outside at all, even with sun glasses on. Even the lights in the house hurt... it sucked!!
I now suffer thru the sunburned nose thing all summer.... sun glasses will really focus that sun on your beak!! I go thru a lot of SPF 50!!
But I have learned to live with it and deal with it the best I can. I don't let it stop me from doing anything I want to do. I refuse to let it alter my lifestyle... which normally involves being outside working on something, fishing somewhere, boating, skiing, etc... Tell your son that no matter how bad it is, it will only get better with time... never give up your hobbies or dreams. If an injury like this has to happen to someone, better when you're young... young people learn to cope with issues better than old people... but I would not wish this kind of injury on ANYONE!
Oh, and I'm the first one to leave the area when the guys in the office start shooting rubber bands at eachother.... the phrase "it's only funny till somebody looses an eye" has a whole different meaning to me. Protect your eyesight at any cost!! Safety glasses might look stupid and be uncomfortable, but trust me, they are worth it!! Wear eye protection when fishing... I've actually seen someone get a crank bait in the eye... not pretty. Lucky for him he managed to close the eye before it hit... got stuck in the eyelid... glasses would have prevented this. WEAR EM!!!!

My biggest fear. And last weekend my youngest (6) took one in the eye. Luckily he blinked quick enough and all it did was poke his eyelid. He wouldn't open his eye for a while, wo it was a few minutes of stress to see if there was any damage.

I hear you Arrow.
Buying him $9-$19 polarized glass's a couple times a year is cheaper than buying him A NEW EYE.

I totally agree. My girlfriends son (14 yo) asked me the other day why I have so many pairs of sunglasses.... I have 3 pair hanging from the sun visor of my truck. Can't be without no matter what!! One good pair ($80 Nike's for style), one cheap pair (for working or doing something outside the truck.... Z-87 safety approved), and one polarized Z-87 safety approved pair for fishing. Goes along with the rod and tackle box that never leaves the truck!!

Sorry to hear about your son. That had to be tough!! The good news is he is in good hands with the docs here. My brother in law went through some things with his eyes about a year ago and came to the Kellogg Eye Center and they worked wonders on his eye. I was amazed at the things that they can do.
Thoughts and prayers for a speedy and safe recover for your son.
