I am looking at fishfinders and the one I am interested in only gives me the power in RMS Watts as for all the others are in peak to peak power. Does anybody know how to compare the two or convert RMS to peak to peak. I am looking at the Raymarine color DS400-x. Does anybody know if this is a good unit.
Thanks

Generally speaking the RMS is going to be aprox. half of the peak.

The I guess the raymarine I am look at 500 RMS then it is around 1000 Watts peak to peak.
Thanks again

for the Tech"ie" in you!!
RMS
Literally "root mean square." A DC voltage that will produce the same heating effect (power output in Watts) as the AC voltage. For a sine wave, the RMS value is equal to 0.707 times the peak value of an AC voltage. Example: divide Peak-to-Peak by 2 (or in half) and multiple by 0.707 = RMS voltage.
Peak-to-Peak
Normally used to describe the output power of a sonar transmitter. This value is a measurement of the total swing of an AC voltage from its peak negative value to its peak positive value.
Let me know If I can quote that unit for you.

Thanks Mark
DO you know what the peak to peak power is for that unit.
I live in Canada and I don't like ordering stuff across the border I always get nailed on the Duty.

I purchased a DS400x (transom mount) over the winter. I have had on the water about 10 times this year and, so far, I have to say that it is awesome.
The good:
- Completely automatic so far. I have it set in "auto fishing" mode and haven't had to touch a setting yet.
- It has held bottom 100% of the time from 3' to 125'.
- It is very sensitive and literally shows everything under the water.
- You ability to view the screen is not affected by wearing polarized glasses
- The screen is very readable in bright and direct sun.
- Equal performance in freshwater and saltwater.
The things that I wish were better:
- On rainy overcast days, the display can be tougher to see. It is still readable, but it could be brighter.
- The %&^$*% cover keeps blowing off the unit on the highway
- The fish ID feature thinks every return that is not bottom is a fish. I know this is common on all ffs with this feature, but I was expecting more from this units digital processor.
Overall, I think it is a great unit for the $$. The 500 and 600 are the same unit with larger and brighter displays, but you pay for it.
Good luck,
Dan

Sturgeon-
I am unsure on the peak to peak for that unit. it is a 500 watt unit. you could use the formula that I quoted above and back it in.
That duty can be a killer, but then if you can buy it right and still pay the duty on the unit, you may find it affordable.

Watts RMS x 8=PtP
500 RMS=4000 PtP
