I went out handlining on Monday night for the first time.
That is a great way to fish for Walleye.
We got 6 fish and missed a half dozen or so.
There are still alot of fish at the mouth of the St Clair in Port Huron.

Thanks for the report. could you E mail me and fill me in on the lures and colors and stuff? I am planning on getting out in the next day or two and I am out of touch for this time of year up there.
Thanks. Loghog

NES, And don't forget to where a leather glove on your chugging hand. Damn wire will tear your hand up, should you snag up. If I remember correctly the spot Greatlakes is talking about is somewhat snaggy.

Hey what do you need to know,I have handlining for a long time,if you get a reel make sure to load it with the coated downrigger line,,saves the fingers when you get a musky on or a snag,,

I sure miss those days! I used to handline on the Detroit River for many years. It sure was a productive method to put Walleye in the freezer. Nothing like night fishing with all the lights from the city with only the noise from the waves splashing on the sides of my aluminum boat. If you need equipment, Lakeside Fishing Shop in St. Clair Shores has everything you need. I used to use a 40 ft. leader (approx 30 lb test mono) for my top lead which was approx. hip height above the 1 lb. sinker and a 20 ft. lead at approx. knee height. Some guys used to run a 3 ft. lead off the top of the sinker but I think that would only be legal in Canadian waters. I used to use body baits such as Rapalas or (Pencil Plugs mostly used at night) but in the dog days of summer Crawler Harnesses also worked well. When the water is real clean, night fishing is best. If the water is stained, the daylight hours can be quite productive. Good Luck and by the way, Never wrap the line around you finger unless you like the name Stubbs!

Firetiger, Where are your buddies getting them. Although I'm stuck in a Perch rut right now, I would not mind taking my son on his first handling trip. I would assume that the Delphine channel in LSC should start to produce soon and the river system always holds fish and should be getting better as the fall progresses. Anyway, Thanks in advance for any info. John

Sorry Guys I was bird hunting all day Thurs.
I don't handline a whole lot but as far as line we used the uncoated single strand 60# steel. It woked great.I didn't need to use a glove.
I ran a 15ft leadon the bottomand a 40ft on top with a 1-1/2lb trolling sinker off of my shank. Only snagged once.
We were at the mouth of the river in front of the Coast Guard station. The fish hit on chrome plugs.
I carry everything you need for handlining here at the store.
Feel free to call for more info anytime.
Alot of guys tell me now is a good time becuase of the lack of fisherman.
I'd be willing to go with anyone if they need a partner.
