Running a 24v trolling motor on a 12v system will do any damage to the motor? The reason I ask is I just hooked up my new 24v troller this week (thanks to help from Brownsdown) but when I stopped at my buds house to check out the new carpet he put in his boat I noticed he had his two batteries wired in parallel instead of series which makes it a 12v system. :bash: Now he's worried he may have damaged the troller. He ran it this way for about 6 months. After I rewired it everything still seemed to work fine (but with more power now  ) Any thoughts or suggestions?

I don,t know what brand of motor you have... but my motorguide has a switch to run 12 or 24 volts. Sounds like if you hooked it up and it ran with more power you will be OK.

From an electrical perspective, just think of voltage like air pressure running through a windmill. By running the motor at lower voltage, you just put less pressure through it, so it runs slower. It's not good to do it for a long time but the short time he did it should be OK. What's bad is to take a motor set up for 12 volts and running it on 24. That will only work until the motor burns out which will happen quickly.

You had more current running through your motor than you needed, not the required voltage, but more current. If anything, it made your motor run a bit hotter, more heat generated with more current. If she still acts fine, you've obviously not burned anything up so you should now be good to go since you've re-wired the batts into series. :)
