View Full Version : Disable your daytime running lights at the launch
Hi Ho Silver_Joe

While reading another thread, I realized there are alot of you that don't think you can disable your daytime running lights at the launch.
WRONG!
GM Trucks and SUV
Turn the ignition to RUN.
Press the DOME OVERRIDE button four times within six seconds. A chime will sound informing you that the system is off. The system will remain disabled until the ignition is cycled off and on again.
To return to the automatic mode, push the DOME OVERRIDE button four times within six seconds (chime will sound), or turn the ignition off and on again.
Ford
Apply the parking brake 1 click (Will not actually engage brakes) or turn the headlight switch to the park position.
Chrysler
I have never been an engineer for Chrysler. I will find the answer and post it later.
Foreign Trucks
Shame on you!

Why, is thier truck in the water? I never had a problem usually I wait till the guy pulls out with the trailer before backing down. .

at the dock next to you, if someone leaves their lights on, it can be blinding to the person next to em when looking in their mirrors to back down. i never found the running lights to be that bad on the eyes, but bright headlamps and foglamps on the other hand.
kinda interesting, i never knew about how to turn em off. as for my 2000 dodge, i have to turn on my running lamps, they don't turn on automatically. and i would leave those on only when launching (the not so bright yellow lamps). turn off the fog lamps and main headlights.

Steve, Your correct. Dodge trucks do not have the automatic daytime running lights at this time.
BTW Joe, This was an excellent informational thread! Thanks for posting!

Ever been to Manistee or rodgers City? Or Lexington for that matter? There are as many as 12 launches with boats coming and going at a rate of 12-15 every 5 minutes. There is no waiting until the other trucks to leave.

Just taking my experiance at Selfridge and Crocker launch. One leaves the next launches. Nobody behind you with lights.
Easy solution----- launch during daylight.

Hi-Ho, I totally agree with you.
But before I throw in my 2 Cents, I'd like to take this time to once again congratulate all of our OVER PAID weather men and women for yet another accurate forecast. That 15 to 25 NE last night turned into W at 5 to 10, and that rain and wind today, well "take a look outside." There has to be a night class I can take somewhere for a week or so, to get my Meteorologist degree. :o
Now, (at least for my old eyes). Every bright light shining my way and encompassing me in it's cone of light, blocks my view and blinds me almost totally, to anything even with, or behind that light source. If you can see anything through or behind this beam, count yourself very lucky indeed. :o :D
Oh, and I'm equally as found of the guys waiting to launch, that point thier lights down at the ramp. Nothing like being blided when backing out into the crowded river or harbor full of boaters.
If the ramp area is safely lighted enough to see, turn off your head lights please.

Your right Dan, where is all this rain we were suppose to get? I heard 1" or better. Have yet to see a drop.
Boy, I must be missing something with these headlight problems. Or its not bad enough to let it bother me. I'm still trying to figure out what the gripeing is all about.

I don't see this post solving this simple curtisy problem at the ramps, or persuading people who don't understand why they should actually load their boats before they back their boats down the ramp. Like everything else in this (it's about me) modern world, it's just to much hassel.
I learned early how to disengauge my head lights, and do so both at the ramps and before I enter hunting fileds for ducks and geese, or the wood edges for deer. Guess I'm stuck in the old world. But gimme time, I'm slowly learning the new rules.

I don't usually have too much trouble around here (Saginaw) at the local ramps, but I definitely do understand the situation and would of course disable mine if necessary. My '04 F-150 though does not have daytime runners, so no problem. Good luck gents. ;)

Capt. Dan most times I agree with you and I agree on this post also its all about me me me. Got to the saginaw river launch early Saturday morning, got the boat ready (completely) including putting my foul weather gear on. Put the boat in the water tied it up, parked the truck and walked briskley back to the dock. When I got there another guy had backed down the ramp in front of me and his buddy was giving me the evil eye like i was holding them up before i even got in my boat. I have allways been considerate to other guys and tried to cut my ramp time down to a minimum. I jumped in the boat tilted the motor down pressed the primer bulb a few times, when I looked up this punk is still glaring at me. I stopped what I was doing and stared back at him until he looked away  which didn't take long. Well I fired up the Merc let it warm up for a few seconds put her in reverse and before I backed up 4 feet the driver was backing down the ramp I was only 20 feet away when the driver got out of the truck and gave me THAT LOOK too, he got the middle finger of my right hand and a tounge lashing too. As far as I know I did everything right and didn't appreciated thier attitude but even though I know these guys were idiots but it still pissed me off. Now coming off the water....some IDIOT in a offshore racer decided that his time was more valueble than mine and cut me off as I approached the ramp, this I would expect from a non-sportsman so I let it go ( there was 4 of them anyway  ) The guys next to them took 15 minutes to load a 14 boat on the trailer pulled up ON the ramp and thought that was the place to stow there gear and take off thier clothes etc. I parked the boat walked to the truck and when I got back to the ramp they were still there fiddle ####### around with thier crap. Now Jimmy has had enough I jumped out of the truck and said HEY YOU GUYS ABOUT DONE? I WOULD LIKE TO GET MY BOAT OUT OF THE WATER THIS YEAR SOMETIME. I won't repeat what I was told by these two idiots but a guy waiting to get in backed me up so I was lucky there.I should have launched at the cement plant like that wise OLD TIMER suggested, heres to all of us dinosaurs who still think right :grouphug: Oh and by the way I allways turn my lights off on the ramp
Good luck and good fishing Jimmy

I run into guys like that all the time. I also had others comment how fast and easy I get mine unloaded and loaded. Its called ORGANIZATION. And wanting to let others take thier turn in a resonable amt. of time.
At a couple of launches I use, if you get there late, you got 1/4 to 3/8 mile to walk to get back to the dock after parking your vehicle or retrieving your vehicle after returning to the dock. Do others really think you can snap your fingers and "poof" your back. Maybe the DNR should have a valet service.
Maybe some of you might go into a little detail on how others headlights bother you so those of us don't understand might learn something. Are thier lights in your mirrors or right in your back window? Maybe I just get to the launch too darn early to notice this.

Jimmy.
Remember you asking me once why I quit fishing opening day on the Rivers. Your post is the perfect example. And I'd never expect a guy launching and fishing alone to be as fast as two guys working as an experienced team. Heck, I might even offer to give the guy a hand if I was next in line. Now wouldn't that be shocker. :yikes:
And Mike.
I guess the best example of what lights do to me at ramps is when you get pulled over by the police at night, and they turn on their Q-beam behind you. Theres a good reason for that. Standing behind that light gives them all the advantage and blinds the guy in front of it from seeing what going on behind the light. :chillin:

Mike,
I have a hellua time backing down the ramp when someone leaves thier lights on causes instantaneos blindness. I am sure some of guys are not aware of what they are doing. I guess not all people are affected by this after reading this post but it sure bothers me. I think when I am alone I do a pretty good job of getting the boat in and out and if its busy at the ramp I put more effort into getting in or out in A hurry. After yesterday I don't know why. I apoligize to all you good folks for my ranting and raving I have calmed down now and what can you do anyway thats just the way it is now days.
Good luck and good fishing Jimmy

wow jimmy that was bad, chamookman and I had pleasant experiences at lee st. saturday......probably because we launched during mid-afternoon and loaded at 11pm!
The headlights at the ramp blind me too....maybe some folks' eyes are more sensitive than others...I wear contacts and it seems that bright sunshine kills me....
I tried this 'press the button 4 times' thing on my 96 chevy pickup and I did not work?? I'll re-read the post and try the other methods, because I've often felt guilty that I couldn't turn my lights off.....
now let us go fishing.

At the park where I launch, there are three docks - in/out both sides of each dock. If I'm backing into a launch on one side of a dock where a guy is already in the process of getting his boat on/off the trailer, his lights if on can be pointed directly into my side mirrors making it very difficult to see anything other than his lights. It's only happened a few times.

It is very true that it is hard to back down ramps when there are a set of head light are shinning in your eyes.
Maby the guys that don't understand have never tryed backing down a busy ramp in the dark?.
GM truck light will stay off if you set the parking brake one click before starting them.

:yeahthat:
I beleive GM Truck/SUV's "press the dome light 4 times" is only on the newer models (2000 and up). One click on the parking brake is the way to go (before start) for older models. I thought I was the only one that knew that...;)
but would it be too much to get out and nicely ask the driver of the car to turn off their lights?? Whats with all the Ramp-Rage?

On my 2004 Dura Max, I simply have to turn the light control button down and it turns them off. Turn it up, at it turns them back on. I think their finally wiseing up and making it easier for newer models.
And the ramp rage I think is caused by several things, especially on opening days, weekends and hoildays. Anticipation, excitiment, impatients, worry about getting a spot to park and being first on the water to fish. And God help the person stopping/interupting these well thought out plans. Most of these things mean less to me now, than they did in years past. Probably because I have better confidence in my own fish finding and catching abilities, no matter what the situations.
This isn't to say that using common sense at the ramps to keep things flowing smoothly is not necessary. Everything in life has un-written rules and curtisies. This is still one of them. :p

Dan - I could not agree with you more. Just using some plain old common sense would go a long way in the battle of launching plans. What good does it do to get all worked up, other than start or end a day of fishing. I really appreciate what you had to say in your last post, and sometimes believe that when plans are interfered with or someone believes that you have wronged them, then prepare yourself for what you are about to recieve. Sad state of affairs at times. I deal with it every day as a high school assistant principal. Oh well.
This has been a fun psot to read, with some really good points. The most important being this, everyone should be willing to help their fellow sportsmen out. This may mean a multitude of things, inlcuding taking care of headlights. Thanks for the laughs and information, posts like these keep me coming back for more!!

I guess I understand now that you put it like that... Ramp-Rage... I was just thowin that out there. I guess there is such a thing.
great post. Just another reminder that we all need to "stop and smell the bait bucket" every now and again... But, I've been there before too, and can relate with some of the posted stories of being frustrated at times.
thanks for the info, fellas.
i got a 97 suburban & i can turn the daytime lights off any timei want by pushing the park brake one click, soon as you release it they go back on. try bolles harbor early in the morning, guys lined up 50 cars deep. last time i went(last fall) they had 2 dnr guys directing people to the open ramps and watching the whole thing and another guy would walk down the line and tell everyone to get ready BEFORE you launch. that works very well, and i bet it saves alot of fights from starting. Rodgers city is very much the same first thing in the morning without the dnr guys. usually there is a city cop just sittin in his car watchin, but it seems up there the people are just more polite i drove big rigs for 10 1/2 years so i know first hand about lights in the mirror, lots better backin up without them in your face. ;)
Ok confusions. Tried it on a 1999 3/4 ton chevy. Didn't work. Any ideas? How about the sensor on the dash to turn the lights on when it at night time? Can you bypass it?

I tryed the four click thing and didn't get it to work either. But, my 2002 chevy lights will stay off if I do the one click on the parking brake.
