Earlier this week I was reading a thread about Native Americans and some of the problems sportman see with what is/has transpired over the years with treaties that have been signed many years ago. After reading an article from our local paper, I still question why the DNR can't work with governing bodies of our local tribes to amend these treaties for the protection of our resources. If interested, read the article and pay particular attention to the bottom five paragraphs. This is in no way a bash at anyone, just some pretty significant implications that could occur to our fisheries. Tight Lines

From the article:

A chat with Jim Ekdahl, the DNR's leading expert on such matters, confirms that they are monitoring the situation and gathering data for a court case that is scheduled for next March, when the ability of the tribes to harvest fish outside the usual laws on inland waters will be tested.

Looks like maybe the DNR is trying to do something about the situation?

The other thread was closed for a reason. If the bashing starts again, this one will see the same fate.

GoneFishing,
You can close it if you see fit. I just wanted to make others aware of problems that our DNR face, and how effective they are at finding a resolution that satisfies everyone. Thanks to all for taking the time to read the article. Tight Lines.

No need to close it at this time. Making others aware is a good thing. I just don't want to see the bashing that went on in the other thread.

I wish the Detroit papers had more on Michigan hunting and fishing. It is big business dollars for the state. Thanks for posting. It would be great if the DNR can find some common ground with the Indians rather than losing every time they meet to resolve issues.
