Residents claim wetlands mistreated
But their Brighton Twp. neighbor says she isn't violating the law by filling in her land.

Protecting the state's wetlands
Wetlands are regulated by the state if:
• They are connected or located within 500 feet of an inland lake, pond, river or stream.
• They are larger than 5 acres and located in counties with a population of more than 100,000.
• The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has determined that they are essential to the preservation of the state's natural resources.
• They are connected or located within 1,000 feet of the Great Lakes or Lake St. Clair.
Wetlands violations
If a wetland is regulated by the state, it is unlawful to:
• Deposit fill material in it
• Dredge or remove soil or minerals
• Build in it or develop it
• Drain surface water
