I was thinking about taking the boat out this weekend after some eyes on the Detroit River. The problem is, I have NO idea what I am doing or where to go. I have been to St. Jeans a couple of times with a buddy, but we never caught anything. Is this the area that I should go this time of year? I would like to either jig or troll for eyes in the river, since I don't have any hand-lining gear. Is this what I should be doing? If jigging is ok, what weight jigs should I be using? Also, if St. Jeans is a good landing to start from, which direction should I head from there? Again, I have no idea as to landmarks or names of sections on the river. I do have a map of the system, but that's about it. Sorry for all the questions, but just looking to get out this weekend and maybe even catch a fish or two. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Go downsteam from the launch for about 4-5 miles. That puts you near the RenCen and Cobo. Start jigging just off the seawall with 1/2 oz jig heads (more or less depending on current). You'll see the other boats. I usually jig just past the marina on the donwriver side of cobo, then motor back up and start over. Use a Trolling motor to keep your line vertical. Pretty Easy.
Other places are the Roostertail Bar just downriver from the launch and the steelmill just past the Ambassador bridge. By no means am I a Det River expert. I have only gone a few times with buddies, but now that I bought a boat for that type of fishing, I'll be doing more of it when I'm not chasing Silver. Hopefully this will give you a good start.

My suggestion would be to go North of the St. Jean's launch. We fished there this weekend and got limits jigging. You must stay vertical. You can't miss it. You'll see the large # of boats. We tried down by the bridge in the early morning and we did much better at the sturgean Hole. Just my 2 cents.

When trying to stay vertical watch your line, if your line goes off towards that way, gently motor towards it until it becomes vertical...now hold that...for 5 hours!!!! it's a touch but once you have it you are 50% of the way towards catching fish. Also set your hook on anything that feels different.....I set the hook 100 times yesterday, 9 times it was a walleye!!!...andy
