We live between Milford and Novi. Several nights ago, long after dark I heard what I could have sworn was an owl. The next day my wife saw the creature high up in the trees in a thicket near our house. She described it as being fairly large with a white breast.
Any ideas based on that vague description as to what kind of owl this might be? Is there anything we can do in the food/habitat department to make this owl want to stick around?

Trout my thoughts about the owl were never as a game species. I just want to keep it around if possible as it should have a great effect on rodents in the area. Where do you buy an owl call at?

Steve,
Check any hunting or fishing sporting goods store and look in the turkey hunting section... owl calls are often used as locator calls for turkey hunting!
Hope this helps!

Probably a Great Horned Owl then because it sounded like the classic owl.

Steve,
I don't know what kind of owl you have near your home, but we have a lot of owls near my camp. I have an owl call(purchased at Bass Pro) but, have had as much if not more success calling them w/ my own voice. I have had back and forth conversations w/ them for up to a half an hour on some nights. My grandson always gets a big kick out of it when they answer me. I don't what kind these are either but they have the traditional "Who cooks for you" sound.
I do know they are rather large as I had one fly in front of me while sitting in my treesatnd one morning before daylight. He about scared out of my stand and I know anything within 200 yds heard my heart pounding after that.
