Illinois man has killed 35 deer in eradication zone in two years
BELOIT-Maybe Curt Parker should be a poster child for the DNR.

In the past two years, Parker has shot 35 deer in the disease eradication zone, where the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wants the deer herd slashed to slow the spread of chronic wasting disease.

Not everybody agrees with what he's doing.
"I know a lot people will say, 'That bastard!'"

That's a lot of $ on non-resident tags! And on only 10a. of ground!

You gotta admire a guy that keeps good records like that. Just wish the guys that hunt around me were as efficient as him.

I would imagine if he owns land there, and pays taxes on it he would not have to pay for non resident tags. Plus it says there free.

Huh? Everyone non-Michigan resident I know that owns land and hunts here must buy non-resident tags, and likewise, every Michigander I know that owns land in other states purchases non-resident tags to hunt in those places.

A friend of mine in WI told me that their requiring food pit/baitpile sites to be sanitized at the end of each season to limit the spread of CWD. Anyone else hear about this too?

Ridiculous at best 35 deer in 2 years c'mon, if I was his neighbor there are gonna be words that is for sure. A small piece of property and he feels it is his duty to kill in excess like that?

Adam calm down; this guy is just being a good citizen! The article says that the adjacent land neighbors (with large parcels) do not allow any hunting. Obviously, this guy is only making a dent in the surplus deer coming off his neighbors property. Also, its the CWD eradiction zone and the deer population levels have yet to be reduced anywhere near target goals.

The guy is a genius.

He only owns 10 acres.

Now that his name is known, and he has a proven track record, I am certain that he can get permission to hunt on a number of quality, and much larger, chunks of hunting land!

FL, this is sarcastic of course but it seems as though you wish every doe in the stinkin state dead by your posts

I guess being near large unhunted land he is different in scenarios from most but if that was here and he was my neighbor :bash:

Adam - the KEY to this story is the guy is hunting a CWD erradication zone - the goal is to wipe out CWD is that area - he is attempting to stop the spread of CWD to the adjacent areas -

Market hunting is illegal and we are not implying that Parker is receiving any personal gain for all the deer given away. Giving venison away can be noble use of the meat. This still opens the potential for abuse. In this day of "bartering with a wink" 35 deer can have great value.

Has anyone else heard word of the rumor that BDL mentions? Is that something that will come to MI in the future?

You did not miss anything Ferg but in my opinion it is a little overboard for one individual with such little land. I remember rumors of the Ithaca area farmer who killed a ton of deer (over 50 ) in one year on his farm and I thought the same thing then. Is it or was it legal with the the antlerless tags available? YES it was but is it a good thing to do for one person? In my mind no. Plenty of people out there willing to get 1 or 2 deer a year and be thrilled to do so. This guy simply likes to pull the trigger and I think that is wrong especially with only 10 acres legal or not CWD zone or not. JMO

Tough situation, but you can't really look at this as a typical hunting arrangement. The DNR has specific goals in mind and this guy is helping them to acheive those goals. His aggressive culling is bound to create some hard feelings, tho, and the fact that he's a 'flatlander' isn't going to help relations with any camps in the area.

Mr. Parker is working within the bounds of the law, so I cannot fault him, but I can't help and wonder if it might have been easier on him if he just kept quiet about his exploits.

....I'll guess he'll wish that article was never written. He's gonna become a target for every overcharged opinion out there...be they on the anti-hunting or hunting side. He's just going to get lambasted by everybody.

Read the posts on this forum alone, a very very pro-hunting forum. Parker is being admonished for shooting "too many" ... even though the State encourages him to, allows him to, and needs him to. It's a Chronic Wasting Disease zone for heavens' sake. The herd must be drastically reduced.

And us, we Michigan hunters, well hell's bells, we better be supportive of Wisconsins' intent to reduce the herd in the CWD zone. We sure as blazes don't want any CWD infected whitetails filtering down Illinois' Chain-o-Lakes watershed into the Kankakee watershed then on in to the St.Joe watershed.....and right into Michigan. It simply ain't that far. It can happen. And sooner or later, without a drastic reduction in that herd in the counties sitting on Illinois' northern border....it WILL happen.

But, as far as poor Parker......Man, enjoy the venison. Enjoy the times you were out there the last couple of years. 'Cause, partner, your world just changed.
