I started pullin plugs for steelies last spring when the river is REAL busy. And all my favorite haunts are takin. It is kind of fun but a lot more work.Has any one tried a front mounted trolling motor, and what kind of control do you get? I use a 16 foot jon boat. Also what #test do you use? When you're runnin the plugs over beds do you reel them up closer to the boat so there not bangin the rocks, and does this scare the fish? Thanx

Dutchman,
You stumbled onto the "big secret tactic" for fishing Steelie's and Walleye ;) Some of us Kalamazoo river rats have been doing this for awhile now with great success. I have a bow mounted Minnkota 50lb. thrust on my 16' boat that I put on last summer. The long cord to the foot pedal lets me control it from any where it the boat and the thrust is just about right for a 16' flat bottom.
As for line length. My dad and I have caught quite a few fish with only 30' of line out. Prior to having the Bow mounted outfit, we just trolled with my outboard and this didnt seem bother the fish much either. However I think boat control is gained from pulling from the bow instead of pushing from the stearn. Either way I think you catch more fish by covering more water and usally from areas that you normally wouldnt anchor to fish. Here's a link to see some of the fish we have caught doing this : http://www.homestead.com/fishtalesgametrails/steelhead
