Just a question on Yarn Flies. Ive always used either spawn or wax worms and thought it was time to try something different.
Just wondering how you rig up a yarn fly. Ive seen guys just wrap them around there hooks with a split shot on the leader, but is that the most effective way to rig them? And I was also wondering where to use them, in the deep holes or somewhere else. Thanks for any help

Yarn flies are what I fish with more than anything, mainly because I never have fresh spawn and they are easy to make.
1st learn to tie the snell knot. This was a pain in the ace for me to learn, some people learn it quicker but heck I still struggle sometimes. Maybe someone has a link that shows how to tie this knot(?). Tie a snell knot on your hook, egg style hook that is(with the eye slanted back).
This is the fun part here...1st I will cut a piece of for example, Orange yarn off, this 1st piece should be like 1/2 an inch. I will then spread the Orange yarn out. Next I will cut a smaller piece of a different color off, chartruese for example. This piece only needs to be like 1cm, very small, you dont need much because you cut it down anyways. I take my smaller piece of chartruese yarn and twist it until it is a tight piece (for example I put mine in my mouth so that it is a small piece that stays together). Now put the small piece of yarn inside the larger spread out Orange yarn and roll it up!! Serious pretend like you are rolling a cigg or something!
This gives you two colors, a main color(orange) and a smaller eye color (chartruese). Slip this combo of yarn into the snell loop and pull tight (again find a link that shows how to tie the snell). Then you will need to trim the yarn ball down to size. You need sizzors so that after you wet your yarn you can trim it down to resemble a tiny egg.
Myself I enjoy tieing these things up when I am out on the river, esp. when the fishing is slow you can mix and match different colors to try to find the chosen food.
