I just thought I would share an interesting experience I had last Friday. I was able to go work with MDNR Veterinarian Dan O'Brien while he was doing some forensics on a Michigan Grey Wolf that was killed in Gogebic County back in the late summer. He was looking at the wolf to try to determine its cause of death. The wolf was approximately a year old, and weighed 63 lbs. After putting the wolf under a fluorscope, we couldn't find any lead in the animal, and proceeded into cutting her open to try to determine what was her cause of death. When we cut the chest cavity we were able so see that she had much internal bleeding, and on further inspection, she had a ruptured liver and right lung. With the spots of fur missing on the hide, Dr. O'Brien felt pretty confident in saying that the wolf was probably hit by a car. This was the first wolf I have ever saw, and the whole process of examing her was pretty neat. I am hopefully going to get to work with Dan more throughout the school year, and this summer. If I ever get to see something pretty interesting, I will be sure to post it. Just thought I would share a little of the experience.
