The plants around it in the picture look to be Knapweed and some appear to be blooming still.

Was that pic taken in the Fall or late summer after a snow?

From what I read, it seems like these animals should be already dug in for the winter. Do you think it got moved out of it's old home? The other day I looked over and, we have alot of turkeys in our area. The turkeys were all over the dirt spot on the ground. The bager came out and just looked around, and then went back into it's hole. I thought at first, it was going to be quit an interesting event.

I think that they know spring is coming and are just getting more active and ready for the change in seasons. I have also been noticing a lot of woodchucks starting to tidy up and remove excess dirt from their holes as well.

Thats a cool pic!
I wonder if that's a female and she may have been digging out a chamber to give birth.
Keep an eye on the den maybe you'll see some young ones too!

Thats what I was thinking too. Female getting ready to have babies. But I don't know for sure. I'll keep a close eye on it, and let you know. That make some real cool pic's. Also a friend of mine seen 2 bald eagles eating on a dead deer. Trying to get some cool pictures any chance I can.
