Anybody attend Practical Sportsman Award Banquet, alot of nice bucks. And unusal mounts. Food was good, fred was great. And let me tell you I was very impressed by how he gave everybody the same amount of attention. He started at around 7:30 and interviewed until 12:00 midnight. Time went fast any many funny stories were told. About 300 people attended alnog with myself. Maybe next year I could get a deer to take.

I would like to share just a couple of the dumbest stories I heard at the banquet.
Now you know they may put this on TV.
One guy gets up on stage, story goes that a buddy if his at work has 33 acres that has not been hunted in about 8-10 years. He gets permission to hunt and gets all his gear together along with a bag of carrots. He arrives at the 33 acres and finds a semiload of carrots already on the ground. He proceeds to tell that he did not need his tree stand because another one was already up, over the huge bait pile. He climbs up into the stand and takes his amazing buck. When fred asks him about the 2 gallon bait law, he comments "I thought it would be O.K. because the bait pile was not mine."
The other story goes as follows: a different guy goes hunting on opening day, he hunts on the ground. He see's a huge 10 point coming, some how the deer spokes. His buddy told him that if a deer is running away from you, charge the deer as fast as you can. This will close the distance fast. So he proceeds to tell how he charges at the deer while shooting, yes running while shooting. He states he hit the deer in the butt and it bleeds to death.
My buddy said to me, I'm glad we don't hunt with those guys. The guy running and shooting, everyone at our table said he needed to go back to hunters safety class.
It still was alot of fun, I guess thier is people who make bad judgement calls in all walks of life.

You would think those guys would have enough sence to just make up a story. Fred and Zack probably spent alot of time in the editing room. 4 1/2 hrs of tape should make a decent half hour show of the legally harvested bucks.

Thanks for sharing the sharing the pictures of the mounts. Some nice looking deer there. Even saw a mount of two I would like to get some day.
I am always amazed at how many archery bucks are taken on the evening of November 14th. Some at very long distances.
Also, the guys that claim to shoot a deer in southern lower Michigan with a slug gun at 350 yards across a field.

I was also in attendance, and thought the night was entertaining for the most part. Fred stayed focused on the hunters and their stories, with only the occasional Easter Bunny reference.
Some Awesome racks, interesting and funny stories, good food and good people.
Say what you will about Fred, who is minimally an odd bird, but he made some good points about how our outdoor pursuits continue to be over-commercialized, and how the underlying point of being outdoors should be to have fun.
I believe I was the only Yooper present, so I'm glad I made the trip if for nothing else than to remind the rest of the state that we still take a good buck up here now and again. It's also kinda humbling when your "trophy" suddenly pales in comparison to others - it's ok to be taken down a notch or two lest we begin to think we actually have this hunting thing figured out

Usually does rather well. His property is surrounded by both state and private land, he states there's so much activity (people) in the woods on the 14th it gets the deer moving and he intentionally leaves this piece of property alone and the deer come into it to escape all the commotion! He's never gotten any real monsters but always states the one's he has shot are usually first timers there.

I believe they call that a honey hole. At the banquet we seen not only alot of large bucks, but alot of turkeys. They had two Piebald deer, 1 was the one from alanson. Fred noted he was represting him. The other one was a 50% white & brown deer. And they had one turkey kinda white, forgot what he called that. All in all it was alot of fun.

I shot my buck in Houghton County, where our 40 is located.
I live about 100 miles from there in southern Marquette County. And yes, we still have 30" of snow in the woods!
