Just got back from St.Jeans. Just so happened that Gene was there checking the place out. Not officially opened yet but cement barriers are pulled away from the gate. I beleive the gate will still be chained until officailly opened. 5 dock are in frozen into the canal. So much ice flowing down that I took a quick run across to Belle Isle and back ;) . It's all jammed up at the Belle Isle Bridge.
If temps don't rise quick it looks loke my Good Friday will be a bad Friday  .

Yeah, I've known Gene for a long time. He's a great guy, you take care of him and he'll take care of you. He doesn't say no to a cold one now and then either.

How is the st. jeans launch? I have read so many bad things about it from the people on this site.

I dont have a really nice boat but just got a new truck so I am a little nervous.

what do you guys think?

Mike

I've parked there plenty-o-times and never had a problem. It's not the nicest of areas, but it works for me. We drive new vehicles too.

i have been launching at st. jeans almost 20 years, never a problem.gene watches the place pretty good. the problems start when he goes home at night.a little safer but kind of a tricky launch is alter road.the last 3 years it has been all but unusable because of the low water but this year should be much better.there are people who own the place who live in the house on the grounds and you have to know how cross the bridge to get on the island. not too many crooks know where it is. also ,with the trailer park gone, the riff raff are slowly being forced out of the area.i used to launch there all the time with an old, heavy 19 foot fiberglass cuddy.i have seen boats up to 26 feet in and out of there.take alter road south of jefferson to the one lane bridge over the canal go right and the launch is on the right.it might be a safer choice for night travel on the water and is never locked,so you can retrieve your boat all night

I was reading some old posts about st jeans and there was some talk of a night time security guard and a cop that would hang around till 1:00, then they would lock the gates.

I will be going at night handlining. Just had my truck hit in the street 2 weeks ago which cost me 500 dollars so not looking forward to anymore damage this year.

I have used alter before a couple times during the day. I know what you mean about water levels.

Thanks,
Mike

I don't leave anything in my Truck and leave it so a theif can look inside . I also leave the doors unlocked with the alarm turned on. this way If they want to look inside they don't have to break the window and the alarm kills the ignition . I also have a lock on my trailer and the receiver hitch.

I do feel safer at Alter road. When you exit the docks at alter go left and take the long way .last year it was 4 foot all the way.

Ed,

Leaving your doors unlocked only makes it easier.

The whole idea is to complicate things. If they want your vehicle they will get it.

That all depends on how well the ignition kill relay is hidden (which is usually not good by aftermarket installers) and how much time is available.

Wiping out the audible siren without breaking a window (ie: unlocked doors) can give them the time that they need.

Just for the record, I am not a thief. I worked at a car dealership (body shop) and dealt with stolen/recovers on a regular basis. Some of the recovers had alarms some did not. Had the same car (Cutlass 442) come back 3 separate times with an alarm installed. It astounded me how it kept disappearing even with the alarm installed.

The alarm is on but I unlock the door with the key. I've seen many car windows broken out. If they want my truck they will get it. I just don't want to replace my window because they wanted to look inside.

They are not trying to steal cars. Thay are most likely drug addicts and drunks looking for anything to sell for a fix.

I've been doing what Ed said for 19 years now and have never had a busted window.

I have always done the same even at the grocery store. No sense in someone beating up on the old girl just to take the change out of the console.

This doesn't have anything to do with St. Jean but I went down to the Joe for a hockey game a few years back and parked my old van in an alley to save the parking fee. It was an older van so I just left the doors open so anyone could look inside and see there was nothing there. The stupid theif wasn't smart enough to check the door and broke the dang widow anyway. Sometimes you just can't win! :p
