I have started making pencil plugs this winter. I turn them on a lathe and have made 150 so far.
But now I have to paint them. I bought an airbrush this week and going to get paint tonight.
I am just not sure what colors I should spray. can you guys make some suggestions?
I know what worked last year doesn't always work this year. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mike N

you might want to birng up the rapalla web site it has all the colors of raps might get some ideas. Otherwise find something new. I liked the michael Jackson. blk with prup dots and a little gold flake. You might want to also try the ugly gobie color I haven't seen any plugs painted in that pattern.

F-Walleye: You may want to take a trip up to the North end of St. Clair and give Ed Miller a visit at Miller bait. He's a old pro going on 87 this year. I'm sure he has a few pointers he would show you and is also a master wood carver. You should see some of his fish he has carved and painted.I use alot of his plugs and they work. Now for fishing his wife will out do him anyday but that's another story . Good luck with your endever.

They are on the river Just south of Charlies Rivercrab by about a mile or so. (south of the city of Marysville.) He also has used handlineing reels. I felt like I was in the Cooperstown of river fishing

Miller is about 1 mile north of the St Clair on the east side. He has a boat on the ground in his front yard with flowers in it. I think it's red and white . You might want to get ahold of Ed Stringer here on the net . He might know if he is in town or in the warm weather for the winter.
Have a good weekend I'm heading up to Caseville tonight. The Perch are in at Bay Port. See ya

these would be my suggestions (mind you its just mine own personal prefs). My favorites:
redhead with a silver scale body
redhead with pearl body
somewhat of a clown type (rednose, black around the eyes, yellow body)
wonderbread (red head, white body with red and blue spots)
green head, silver body, black herringbone back
green head, silver body, green spots, black line down back

Just some ideas. vampire is a good color scheme also.

Hey Ed what does the ugly gobie look like?

I think he means try painting one the same color as a goby and I agree its ugly but the eye's might just like it

Just a couple of thoughts that I have which may help you out. Since you are starting to airbrush these things, silver is going to be a very difficult color to work with since everyone is used to the "metallic" finish. If it was me I would work with the basic color schemes that are producers on most waters. That being the firetigers, wonderbread, etc. It will be easier for you to work with these patterns because they are a little forgiving and are eye candy for the buyer, that is if you plan on selling them. The color you put on top doesn't really matter since the fish feed from below or at the side of the bait. I look forward to seeing some of your work. My 2 cents worth anyways.

I really don't plan on selling them. I enjoy making them and it's fun to have a ton of sticks to choose from. I will have no problem giving a few away if someone wants to try them, and if they work out well I can sell a few to pay for some of the cost involved.
If you guys give me some ideas through the year of what colors you would like to see I can make those.
I plan on putting some pictures on the site in the next week or so if you want to check them out.
So far I have the manufacturing side down, now I need to see how the painting goes.
Till then I am still open for suggestions
Thanks guys
Mike

very cool! i've always thought if i just get my lathe setup i might give it a whirl, but haven't gotten to it. my buddy got a great deal on pencils last year (i woulda gotten em but i was broke as a joke so i let him on the deal). I think it was something like 115 for 200 of em, plus some stubbies and a custom three teir box. VERY VERY COOL! i got addicted to whippin last year, when i get back to MI in may, i'll see ya on the river!

That wonder bread color such as the one in the upper right of the above color chart has been a good color for me no matter what the conditions are.Making your own pencil plugs sounds like a great hobby.Nothing like that instant feeling of a snag and then it starts tugging ! soon !

F-Walleye,
I got this chart a few years ago from Thompsons Bait & Tackle in Pt. Huron across from the public launch on the Black River. I scanned it at a higher resolution and saved on my hard drive for a larger picture. Send me an e mail and I'll send it to you and anyone else that might want a picture of them also. In the subject line of the e mail put "Nite Stalker Chart", I delete all e mails without opening them when I don't know who's sending them.....Bob B.

Hey Bob nice to see you on the board. I just came from the river and there are some ice flows coming down. There was also a guy kayaking and the Coast Guard. They left the dock in at Marysville all year for you- it's there and ready right now :) A few pike have already been caught casting from shore around the ramp area. Let's hope for a quick warmup! It seems the water temp will be behind this year with all the ice still to go through..gilly

Gilly,
Thanks for the report on the river. As for the docks staying in over the winter, maybe they were hoping they would get destroyed. So they could build a better one that wouldn't allow any boats to get pulled under it when a ship went to fast down river and sink it when the water came back in and the boat stayed under it. Not that it would ever happen :tdo12: . (That happened on the same date the Fitzgerald went down.)
We still have a while till the Walleye start hitting thou. According to my records they should start up about the middle of April. At least for whipping at night anyway. It is good to hear of some people getting out and catching something even if it is from shore................Bob B.

Thanks Ed. I forgot to mention it was very foggy this morning as you can see from the pic. Around here foggy late winter mornings means one thing- the air is finally warming and the fishing season will soon follow. Heck, I bought my wife a Lilac scented candle for her birthday today to remind us of that magical time in spring....... ;) let 'em bloom!
