i am going to give one warning for all the ***** idiots out there who have a problem marking there spearing holes....if i see you walking away from your holes i will grip you up by your neck and throw you in myself(i went in today at selfridge) it takes 2 min to do....use common sense, these holes are not going to freeze as quickly due to warmer weather....all you need is for a child to fall into one of these and not come up........and for the people who do replace or mark....THANK YOU

ummmm, at least perch spearing is closed on LSC. is pike spearing open still? man, that sucks about going in, i've had a few close calls with spearing holes myself. usually i walk with a spud in front of me, and that was the only thing that saved my behind a few times. sure would be nice if they all marked it nicely like some people have the common courtesy to do.

Before you go blaming someone, you might have just fell thru a gas pocket alot of them form out there at Selfridge this time of year. You have to watch out for them at Cotton rd too.Only reason I am saying this is spearing season has been closed for some time now.Plus as dirty as the water was this year I doubt very many people were even spearing unless they were in very shallow water. As always you have to play it safe this time of year.

Wow...... I see a number of problems in this post. The 1st being that spearing season has been closed since the 1st of march. As others stated, things are thawing out out there, could be a gas pocket, but I doubt that it was a 2 week old spearing hole. I dont believe that any of these ***** idiots (Me being one of them) have a problem making the holes, the problem lies in the ***** idiots who fall in the holes. Second, if everytime you see someone leaving a spearing hole you toss em' in, I dont think its gonna be too long before you end up back there yourself. I sympathize with everyone those fear their child falling in one of these, I actually went thru one when I was 5. For this reason it is strongly encouraged that the holes are filled or marked. I always do one, or both of these things when I chop a large hole. But, unfortunately not everyone does. That is a good reason to watch your kids and your step on the ice.
Sorry you fell in, hope you at least had some fish to show for it, and not too much lost gear.

Yes, people should use common sense. Mark your wholes! On kent lake 6 (was in 7th grade) years ago i fell in through one of those wholes. I'm happy that i walked over the whole lengthwise so that when i put my elbows out they hit the ice, but I still was 3/4 in the water. It was a frantic 10 minute run with my father running to the car to get naked and turn on the car. By the time i got to the car my feet and lower ankle were a webby white. Pretty close to frostbite. I was lucky. My feet peeled the next couple of days, and my father who is a doctor said that it was basically equivalent to a 1st degree burn.

Thats why I bought an ice saw....I can leave a chunk on top of the ice to mark it. The problem comes in when guys auger two or three holes and bust out the web....theres no chunks big enough to leave that can be seen. Add a little dusting of light snow that gets stuck in the small bits of augered ice chunks and you get a surprise when you step in it. The only thing you can do is avoid those little snow drifts that mysteriously appear out of nowhere on glare ice....often times they are caused by the hole and shavings.

:yeahthat: You cant go and blame everyone the spears.I spear and mark the hole when I leave it.Everyone that I know who spear mark spearing holes also. Its just the few that dont. And I highly dought it was a spearing hole being that the season has been closed for three weeks. Probably just bad ice.

Come on guys, he's just blowing off a little steam. :) Yes everyone needs to mark the holes ( he said thanks to those that do) and we all need to use some caution out there. I have fallen through many times, some my fault and other times unmarked holes, just part of the game. Knowbody likes to get a case of blue balls :yikes:

I just talked to him and yes it was a spearing hole. It was a nice cut square, some people still use spearing holes to fish with poles, so just because the season is closed doesnt stop people from cutting holes. And yes he was just letting off steam, i go thte worst of it i was on the phone with him for 20 min after it happened and he wast very happy
if your letting your child run around on the ice un attended , you need to be GRIPPED UP and thrown in the water yourself. most of these guys said it best. watch your own a** on the ice. take a spud or just walk out with your head up & you will be fine.this is not the place to be threatening people. this site is for fishing guys to help each other & share info on how & where to catch fish or generally have a good time on the water.! :yikes: yesterday i watched a guy go in up to his waist at fairhaven, right at the launch he started bi***in about it & his dad said well you could tell they been drivin in & out of here, what did you expect :yikes: ICE FISHING IS DANGEROUS, USE YOUR HEAD, & yes that is way more than my .02 cents

While I am not the guy that you saw go in at Fair Haven b/c I was alone and not with a dad that told me how dumb I was - I went in up to the waist to at the launch - I take a bit of offense to you telling us how to use common sense b/c we didn't keep our eyes up. Well, my eyes were up, I've been fishing that launch for seven years - walked it hundreds of times - ice looked the same it always has this time of year - was fine when I crossed it going out - and i went in. I know trucks have been up and down the thing wearing the ice down - but what are my options? Pole Vault onto the ice? Lug a shanty/auger/ all other stuff under the sun on top of my head and walk the rocks out? I went in - was b****in' and I think it is my right to be a bit upset that i got cold shorts b/c people feel the need to drive 500 yards to their fishing spot. But don't tell me or the guy who went through a spearing hole that we 'need to use our heads.' Stuff happens and when it does - a "hey man that sucks" is appreciated - not a lesson on how to use common sense B/C I am sure that there are some people that go in even if they have a spud leading the way - or are watching the ice like hawks.
Sorry to spout off - I guess my pride is hurt more than anything for going in the first time - Nothing personal Coho - just lettin' off some steam. I don't like to cause controversy - just a laid back fisherman who got cold and is a bit bitter about it.

I don't blame you for having your pride hurt....all of us would if it happened to us. I agree whole heartedly with what you said about these other idiots that are breaking up our ice at the ramp.....why the hell do they need to drive a 5000 lb vehicle down the ramp and on the ice to go 500 yards? All they do is piss off the rest of us with the cracking they cause, and it sure seems to chase away the fish when they drive by. Not to mention the fact that they destroy the ice at the ramp for the rest of us for the rest of the season, and obviously create the hazard you found. And for what????? Friggin morons....they don't even have the brains to figure out that somebody who does it before them may finish that ice off and render them unable to get off the lake!! I will never understand the mentality of those goofballs......how do they get thru life? (my turn to vent now...sorry.....)
brute, i have been in the ice cold water myself, it sucks, but michman painted a picture in my head that got me thinkin i might see a 35 or 40 year old man throw a 21 year old punk in the water that had nothing to do with him goin for a cold swim    i live on zukey lake and it is mainly a spearing lake {lots of open holes ALL SEASON} we gotta be extra carefull out here. it's part of ice fishing.it could have been a dark leaf or something on the ice that made the hole. i have gotten a soaker more than 1 time walkin on or off the ice, boat launch, spear hole, weak spot, river mouth,10" augerhole, the list goes on & on. pulled my buddy out of metro last year, he was totally under water. took him back to the truck got him changed and had to talk him in to goin back out. we ended up with 38 fish that day all fatties,i still think he fell in a spearing hole that ws old but never refroze.you gotta pay attention out there.

Again Coho - nothing personal - I understand the 'painted picture.' - Just spoutin' off a bit of steam - I'll never forget the shock of the cold water after the adrenaline wore off. Guess we all have to be a bit more cautious.

I was out a couple of days ago and there were two guys dragging out a shanty where they set it up and went in it with a couple of spears! About an hour after seeing this I stepped in two holes-went straight up to my ass!! Two completely separate holes-same leg in each one about 20 minutes apart from one another! They were definitely the power auger trick where you just drill a few side by side!-That made my day of fishing even more misreble!

Think about this. I was coming off the ice one day when my kids were 9 and 6 years old. I was pulling my portable ice shanty with my equipment on top. I instructed my kids to walk between the ski marks the shanty made, to stay off of the deep snow (sometimes there is not ice under it) and to follow at least 10 feet behind the shanty. I was using a spud to lead the way. My 6 year old wandered 2-3 feet outside of the ski marks, stepped on 4 inches of snow and one leg went through the ice up to his crouch. This was not a spearing hole, thank God. As careful as I was with my two boys, looking behind me every 10-20 feet of walking, we still had an incident. How would this situation have been different if this had been a spearing whole? How much is one life worth? Possibly the topic posted here will save a life.

What are these ice saws? Are you talking about chain saws? Cutting a cube and pulling it out sounds like a good idea.

gees, i hope some of you guys don't walk down my side walk!
as for the lame'oos with the morons breaking up the ice statment.
that launch is for all the people not just you! what about the people that have trouble motivating like my father, he can't walk well, but he shore loves to jerk that pole.
i've been fishing that bay for 35 of my 40 years, if ya ask me, since they built that new breaker and ramp it's never been that good. if yous' don't like the launch theres other places to access the bay and one is even a closer walk!
i love to fish with pole and my spear, i also like to race my sled there.
i take my $40,000.oo rig on that ice. and i always walk around and pick and poke and ask about the ice before i go on or off. its only one small place on that whole large lake that we can ride our sleds and fish our ***'s off. so if yous' take a swim walking on the slushy part, you got no one to blame but your own common sence:dizzy:
theres just as many fish wasting littering slobs as there are "moronic" sledders/quaders. i/we don't have any problem letting them know how we feel about it either, just ask the guy who dumped his ash tray in the parking lot, than ran his mouth about it. the whole trash barrel it the front seat of his truck. and the c.o. wrote him a littering ticket when he shoveled it out and tried to leave it there. lol
and some of you guys call your selfs sportsmen:coco: :gaga:
back to the topic:
first let me say the ice is NO place for small children to be running around especialy unsupervised its not a playground. it just kills me to watch this
at least put a life jacket on them, i do to my kids.
as for the spearing holes, i don't like the practice of the blocks on the ice. it dangerous for people walking in deep snow, its dangerous for people ridding
you can't see them at nightor under the snow
its much better to mark them with a branch, good sized twig or some cattails
froze in the ice. the blocks melt at this time of year and then where's the hole??????? you can allways mark large holes, (common sence) you find even if they arn't yours
remember the ice is a temporary porious surface then we drill holes in it.
haa, you better be checking it as you go.
you can just as fast break your leg in an auger hole, as fall in a spearing hole.
buy or make your self a set of ice picks on a rope and wear them around your neck allways, they will save you if you have them on.
how many of yous' bring a set of dry clothes???? because sooner or later if you fish long Enoff your going polar dippin.
NOW LETS GO FISHING!!!!

Michman, I was a little Ired by your post. I am not a spear fisherman, not that i wouldn't go, i just haven't. But, "IT IS MARCH" and the ice conditions on LSC are not great. You have to know the weather is not cold enough to refreeze old hole. If not you really shouldn't be on the ice. Yes, spear fisherman should mark the holes. But you are responsible for yourself.
I have this type of discussion with non-fisherman all the time. They use people who have had a lapse in awareness and judgement while on the ice (mostly people on the news)to generalize us all. Please be more careful to prevent mishaps from occuring.
carefull at ginos I seen another spear fishing hole, but it was in close to the water, the first part of the ice when getting off ginos rocks is all slushy.
