I go with a group to Ontario every year and the place I go has access to a lot of little lakes off of fire roads that the Canadians don't fish because most are Pike lakes. Some are off of two tracks off of the fire roads. A friend caught a 42" 19#er last year out of one of those lakes.

Anyway, the ? I have is I'm looking at an Old Town Discovery Sport 17' canoe/boat(not sure how you would classify it). It has a square back, fits a 5hp, is 41"s wide and holds up to 1,000#s, not to mention it only weighs 119#s. Has anybody had any experience with these boats or know anybody that has? I've loked at some aluminum type boats, but none has the load capacity that this Old Town does.

I've also got a '02 Nissan 5hp 2-stroke that has been barely used that I'm looking at as well. Anybody know the dependabilty of these motors? I know Nissan makes some pretty good vehicles.

Old Townes are very good canoes. The newer Nissans are supposed to pretty good from what I hear and read....no experience with them. With the package you are looking at, it would make a great little lake rig. But, it will always be a two person deal, only one person in the transom seat with the motor etc would likely be impossible without adding balast to the front. May not ever be an issue ofcourse. I would see about a 2 or 3 horse myself, lighter to carry and enough oomph to move something like that with two guys and their gear. Unless you plan on using this rig to haul camping equipment/coolers etc, than the 5 horse would be bonus.

I'd have 3 in the boat 1@ 220#, 1@ 240# & 1@ 270. That's why I'm looking for the 1,000# limit and 5hp. I didn't really think about using it alone , but I can always throw a sandbag in the bow, should I ever go alone, which isn't likely. There's always someone that wants to go fishing. Glad to hear about the nissan's, this guy is going to sell it for $650 which is a deal, seeing how it hasn't really had a gallon of gas through it yet.
