I did the perch fishery a favor today in that none of my catch today was a female...Started at Fairhaven, waste of time...
Went to Cotton, met Yellowbelly and from 1:30-7:00 put 36 keepers in the bucket, lots of small ones released with my biggest of the day at only 9 1/2". Good eaters anyway. Was in 7.5 feet of water and got my fish on a mixed bag, got probably 1/3 of them on minnows, some decent ones on night crawlers, (yes, crawlers) and close to half of them right at dark on minnowheads. Was hoping to get some pigs right at dark, oh well, maybe next Monday... ;)

Ah, here's the problem, definitions. Same as on LE in the fall. One person's Jumbo is another persons good one.
I say the following:
Jumbos: >12"
Good ones: 10-12"
Keepers: 9-10"
Small: 8-9" (Keep on a bad, bad day)
Throw backs: Anything under 8".
Good eaters???? Small fish that should be thrown back.:)

7-8 small, but I keep em on slower days (best tasting)
8-10 perfect keepers anytime
11-12 jumbos, keep most, but do throw back the fat females
>12 football hogs - always throw back, unless going on the wall.

My smallest kept yesterday was 7 3/4" only because my freezer's empty and Monday is generally my only day to go. They usually have to be 8" for me to keep...
iceguy said all, i'm with him on those sizes ;)

Working 2 jobs makes it tough to get out often, but I usually get out every Monday and then one additional morning during the week...I have been fishing harder than working though... :D

Pretty strong 1st post...Are you questioning what I kept on Monday??? 7 3/4 to 9 1/2" are not bad and my friend wanted some of the smaller fish. Only a handful were under 8". It was certainly not a jumbo day by any means...
Most 1st posters get a "welcome" from the others, I can understand why you didn't... :gaga:

My Dad was a comercial fisherman out of Tawas. 7" was the standard size they would bring in. If you do not have fish in the freezer and you know how to clean them you can get a good tasting meal. Sure if you are catching bigger ones throw the smaller ones back. Just my opinion Duane

I guess you didn't get it. I personally don't keep perch under 9". However, my post addressed the question of "keepers". On Lake Erie last fall, guys were yelling Jumbo for 9" perch, I think not. Of course, they were probably drunk. My whole point was that some people think 8 is big, others think an 8" perch should go back in.
Regarding lack of welcome, I'm thick skinned and can hold my own. Also, I'm a good enough fisherman to have plenty of perch (and walleye) in my freezer. The perch are all over 9, the walleye are all over 17.

Is right on especially this year at LSC if you didn;t keep 7 1/2 to 8 inchers at times you wouldn't be eating many fish.I don't think the post of 8-9 inchers on a very bad day is very accurate if you measure the perch you catch a 9 inch perch is very good sized and would always keep.
