:yikes: Was on my way out to the Banana Dike Saturday afternoon on my bike (via the shortcut across the marsh) and broke through the ice and took a plunge into some really nasty smelling swamp water. Luckily, the water in the marsh was only 2-3 feet deep and I was able to pull myself out along with most of my gear and the bike. I did lose one cheap ice fishing rod, a mitten and a little of my pride out there amongst the cattails and muskrat lodges.

On my cold, wet ride back to my truck I reflected on the incident and how lucky I was that I wasn't seriously hurt from the plunge. I also thought about shortcuts and how, in general, they often result in the less than expected outcome. I now realize that I should have thought things over more thoroughly and taken the safer road to the fishing area.

I would strongly suggest NOT taking the marsh shortcut if you are going to fish the Banana Dike. Stick to the road and avoid swimming with the muskrats!!

Marshes even on the coldest days of a prolonged winter are very dangerous. The muck produces not only heat but gas pockets. Ice would be spotty at best.

Glad to hear you got out.

Oh and by the way, I am not only the replyer to this thread but also a member if you know what I mean.

I remember taking the marsh once back to the dyke on a rainy warm day, and got there fine. This was teh march on the south end, BTW, were you go through a past through the reeds. Usually always stay on the road, it is nice and smooth, can get a bit muddy though, and, it may extend you walk about 1/2 mile though.
