mgwm,
I have reapaired the wood transom on my old 16' Starcraft. You have your work cut out for you. It is not overly hard but can be a trick getting it in and out due to the way the boat is put together at the factory.
If you can get the old transom out in one piece you'll be doing good. Use it as a template for the new one. If you can't; take as many measurements as you can (i.e. width, length, height) this will help.
If you plan on keeping the boat for a while I would spring for good marine plywood and glue it up to the thickness you need.
Once you get it built try to get it in place and do some final detail and bolt hole locations. Fasten as the old one was and paint it up good.
Not to big of a deal just takes time to get it to fit right. PM me if you have anymore questions.
Good luck!

Hey MGWM - I went throught the same thing a few years back. I picked some 3/4" marine grade plywood from the lumber yard, and used my old rotted transom as a templete. I had to lamanate 2 pieces of the plywood together (actually just ripped the plywood in half) to get the proper thickness. I used a marine grade adhesive and clamped it together while it dried. After a little sanding and some paint, I installed the new transom with some new stainless screws. It's a pretty easy fix!
