Well today I went rabbit hunting on private property in Goodrich with my friend's Scott and Mitch. We shot 2 rabbits right away and didn't see anything after that. One my way home from Scott's tonight I was coming into a pretty sharp curve and a deer came running off of the golf course and I nailed the brakes and they locked up and I went right into the guard rail. If I could have done it over I would have just hit the stupid thing I'm sure it woulda done less damage:rolleyes: I guess I'm just happy it's still drivable, do you guys think I should try ot fix it myself or should I take it to a bodyshop? The bitch about it is that I just repaced that rim last week after hitting a giant pothole on Clarkston road and I bent it again.

I have PLPD so I don't know how that works....

I am a professional and if you are capable....Go for it! BUT remember...It is not as easy as it looks(or for that matter, sounds). If you have a bent rim, I would suggest an alignment... It may get expensive replacing tires! Good luck!

Basically, you are screwed! Your fault, your responsibility! Would not have mattered wether you hit the deer or the Guard rail, same outcome! I would check the local salvage yard and do what you can afford.....you have aprox $1000 to $2000 dollars worth of damage if you want it fixed perfectly. Weigh the cost vs. value of car.......Older car, I would make it legal(if needed) and drive it...save your money for a new car!

I always carry comprehensive along with my PLPD. Comp. pays the bill when you get a stone in the windsheild and when you hit a deer. It is not that expensive compared to a windshield or hitting a deer.

like dyemen said i would just make it legal put a blinker in and call it cool.i would look into some good coverage.for us sportsman we drive to areas were people hit deer all the time to hunt and fish or live in that area.you could fix the e-class and then put a cow-catcher on the front. i think i would look sweet!!

Thanks guys. I cut all the stuff off that was hanging and I knocked the metal back in place with a hammer. I'll go buy a blinker and a headlight today. There are a couple guys who work for my dad that go to Northwestern Ohio??? It's an auto mechanics school and these guys do really good body work and come up with cool ideas so I'll just let them play with it and see what they come up with:). I kinda want it to last a little longer because it's such a great running car especially being a Ford and all!!!;) The good thing is my little brother is getting his lisence this summer and this car will make an excellent learning car!:)
As an Insurance Agent I always tell people with full coverage you're better off hitting the deer than driving off the road to avoid it. Once you drive off the road, you've turned a comprehensive claim into and At fault accident. A VERY costly difference. You will pay for an at fault for 3 years of higher rates, where a comp claim typically doesnt' raise your rates.
Since you only have PLPD, your SOL(Sh_t Out of Luck), you're lucky an officer didn't run across you or you might have gotten a ticket and an at fault on your MVR. I would look into what 100-250 deductible of comprehensive would cost you, like the guy said above, it will take care of stoned windshields, deer, fire, vandalism to name a few. I have quite a few people with PLPD and a 100 ded comp. It generally doesn't cost too much, unless your pretty young.
just my $00.02

The only reason I have comprehensive is that the car isn't worth that much. I'm buying a truck in the next couple months and I'll have comp. on that for sure.

I try to explain this to alot of my customers as well!! Agents that take the time to explain to their clients the importance of certain things in a policy are far and few between....more are concerned on cost rather than value!:yikes:

write tickets for hitting a deer? Ive hit atleast 4 in my time and never seen this before. No to mention my pal hitting one last month after varmint hunting at 2 am, and the State police taking the report. Also most Ins co will waive the 500 or whatever deductible if its a deer collision.

Tickets??????? :help: didn't see anything about getting a ticket for hitting a deer.....However, if you go off the road and hit a tree, sign, whatever, you are supposed call the police, considering that you damaged someone's property, which could be a ticketing offense....NONE of the insurance companies that I work with WILL NOT waive a deductable if you hit a deer....it is all based on your policy and how you have it set up..... :)

i hope you didn't damage the guardrail and leave.... that is state/county/city/federal property.......
man, that sucks about the car. next time hit the deer and don't raise the risk of death of you/others by swerving. At least ya get a deer typically out of the deal and like the guy said earlier in the post its a comprehensive claim rather than a fault accident claim which in the end could/will hose ya! mmmm, venison....

You pay for it in your premiums......
$0 comp deductable = Higher monthly premiums ALL insurance companies offer different rates of deductables.....That is how your premium(cost of insurance) is mainly based. :chillin:

Ohhhhh.....I get it.....the MSP know everything and if they did or didn't do something then it must be the correct way. Right? Ask me what MSP spends each year on "image enhancing" public relations ads. It seems to be working though.
I'm sure you made a police report on this crash. If you hadn't, there would have been several laws broken. So, I'm going to speak hypothetically so that others may learn from this thread. This is all hypothetical information.
When you get in an auto crash, Snowmobile crash, boating crash, or ATV crash in Michigan you are required to report it to the police "forthwith" (immediately). The definition of an auto crash is:
1)$1000 or more in damage (total, vehicles & property) or
2)A person is injured (however slight. Damage $$ doesn't matter could be $0 if there's injury a report must be made)
3)A motor vehicle is involved (lots of things are M.V.'s)
4)You are on a highway or an area that is generally accessible to the public (lots of places fit the latter description).
From what I see, this young man could have gotten the following citations, hypothetically if he hadn't reported the crash (which I'm sure he did do):
A) Fail to use due care and caution/Unable to stop in the assured clear distance ahead. (also known as "Basic Speed Law" violation) civil infraction-3 points.
B) Fail to report a property damage traffic crash (leaving the scene of an auto accident) misdemeanor-3 points
C) Fail to report a property damage traffic crash involving damage to fixtures (lightpoles, guardrails, signs, etc.). misdemeanor-3 points
(He would probably have gotten "B" or "C", not both, although they are separate offenses both of which he hypothetically could have committed.)
His auto insurance (even though it is minimum coverage) would be liable for the damage to the guardrail or other property he damaged in the crash (not his vehicle though, that's not covered). Hypothetically, of course.
I don't think he would have posted pics of an un-reported wreck on the internet. I'm sure the police were called....JMHO.;)

But the use of forthwith cracks me up as its what every dopey cop uses on TV and they sound like fools. Immediate[ly] would be a good word to use. Most of the time it makes me think they are trying to sound more educated than they are. Prof [English] told me that also......thats all...Rich

First of all there isn't a police officer out there "qualified" to write a damage estimate on the spot. Not only that but the only way to determine the cost of the damage is through the repair process.
Even when writing the "visual" damage there are always, at least 99% of the time additional damage once the vehicle is torn down. This is called a supplement.
There are several ways to write a damage appraisal, new parts, used parts & aftermarket parts or a mix. They all come out to different amounts dollar wise.
Different area's have different labor rates also and if a car is repaired in northern Michigan it cost more than if its repaired in the Detroit metro area.
Most of the time an officer looks at a car and says, thats over X amount of dollars, he may be right more often than not but, just a crap shoot.

I would love to see the laws change. We get a little tired of doing work for insurance companies. Until then, it is the law. The officer has to make an on scene assessment of damage amount. Has worked pretty well for the last 60+ years. By the way, w/o that police report you may get no $$$$.
Back to the thread. Huntin' Horsemen. Nice job on the bunnies. I like to see young people hanging out together, enjoying the hunting and fishing opportunities that Michigan has to offer. Stay safe!
