Few walleye taken over the weekend just a tease
It's not time yet to call your buddies in Cincinnati or wherever and tell them to get on up to "the river" here, but the first walleye of the spring spawning runs were taken from the Maumee River over the weekend.
Most of these early-running fish are jacks, or younger males, said Gary Lowry at Maumee Valley Bait and Tackle in Maumee. He had two anglers each bring in a fish over the weekend, a two-pound jack and a five-pound female.
Lowry was quick to caution that only a handful of walleyes seem to be present right now. "But I expect a push of fish in the next few days," he said. Water temperature yesterday was a fairly balmy 41 degrees, which is "in the zone" for the runs.
The Maumee yesterday was running at 582 feet and had risen a foot since Sunday from snow runoff and thawing. As a result, Lowry noted, wading to the popular Blue Grass Island at Side Cut Metropark is not safe. Normal spring flow is 579 feet above sea level, as measured at the gauge on the I-475 bridge.
With the high flows, the fishing access sites below Side Cut are the most likely suspects to try, including the foot of White Street and Tow Path on the Maumee side and Fort Meigs and Orleans Park on the Perrysburg side.
The state's Buttonwood access site above Perrysburg also may be a possibility, Lowry noted, adding that overall not much fishing action was reported. A few suckers are being taken, and a few northern pike reported around Grand Rapids Dam.
Chris Martin, of River Lures at Grand Rapids, said that anglers coming into his shop over the weekend were going out for crappies and pike, but none reported back with any catches.
Larry Goedde, fish management supervisor for Ohio Wildlife District 2 at Findlay, said that Bob Hesterman, state wildlife officer for Henry County, reported good angler success recently for buffalo carp at North Turkeyfoot Creek above the dam.
Hesterman photographed a pair of anglers with 41 buffalo. An earlier trip by the pair netted 75 buffalo, Hesterman reported.
On the Sandusky River at downtown Fremont, fishing activity was virtually nonexistent, said Bernie Whitt at Anglers Supply there. Whitt noted, however, that stream conditions look good for the walleye run on the Sandusky.
"I'd say that by the next warmup we should be full of fish."

THEY REALLY NEED TO SHUT THE MAUMEE DOWN THIS TIME OF YEAR. THIS IS BULL THAT THEY ALLOW IT TO STAY OPEN. 80% OF THE FISH CAUGHT DOWN THERE ARE FOUL HOOKED. I WANT TO CATCH A FISH THAT BITES NOT ONE THAT HAPPENS TO GET CAUGHT ON MY HOOK AS IT GETS RIPPED across its back.

If ya snag one you let him go, personally I caught 50 legal fish last year, it's a great feeling to feel that tug tug on your floating jig-head. A big difference with the floating jig. Are you mad cause you cant catch them? Just let me know and I'll show you how to make them slam your jig. :grouphug:

i use floating jigs too and catch my fair share legally. its fun to snag and release a few too.i never try to snag them ,but when there thick in the river you can't help it.i've seen my share of snaggers ,especially by orleans ,but the cops haul them off too.

i catch plenty of walleye. enough that i dont need to fish them on their spawning run. i want to keep catching them thats why i dont fish the spawning fish. i wait til they are back out in the lake after the spawn. if they dont close it they should at least put a slot limit on them. too many hogs are caught or snagged and kept. i dont doubt you catch a few legaly. when they are stacked up like cord wood it wouldnt be hard tohave o floating jig float into their mouth with the current. they still need to close the river up for at least a month during spawning. what is the sense of closing lake erie when the rivers where most the walleye a running up are open.

Getting alot of private messages from you guys which is good, I'll post when the hit is on and maybe we can all pick a date when to get together, at least 10 days away from now, we need rain down here instead of this snow. I think it was deadbird who came down last year, we were too early and only managed 1 fish. Good people though. Soon as the bite gets going good I'll post on here and let you all know. I use the floating jig heads, the size of a 3/8 leadhead, green and red. Last year did best on the red head with green and chartruese bodies, 3 and 4 '' bodies. I use a 3/8 weight most of the time about 15'' above the jig. (carolina rig). Also I use 12 lb. main line and my leader is 8 lb. This is in case you snag you only loose your jig and not the weight. Hope this helps and keep an eye on this sight and I'll let you know.

90% lake erie's walleye population spawn on the open reefs of lake erie, most of the fish that are in the maumee come from St. Clair or the Lower part of Huron. There have been studies done on the migration routes of the walleye on lake erie that have shown this. Also the anglers really dont take that many fish from the river considering the amount of fish in the system.
first, the spring run fishery on the maumee has been going on for years, and yet lake erie has managed to develop into one of the world's best walleye fisheries. second, in the old days they used to fish that river like a tuna boat...rippin' lips, backs, tails, and any other body part a hook would sink into. i've seen pictures from the '40-50's showing guys with mountains of walleyes, and yet year after year the walleye fishing is phenomenal. it's weather mainly, not fishing pressure that causes poor spawning seasons.
there are snaggers down on the maumee...you'll see them real easy...5 foot heavy action rod, 20 pound mono that looks like rope, 2 ounce jig head...but hey, there are cheaters everywhere you go, in everything you do. should we shut down deer season because some people poach? the people that know how to fish for river run walleyes, and i like to include myself in that group, fair hook 5 fish for every one they snag and release. floating jig head, the right color, and the right weather, and its katie bar the door. like the previous poster stated, most of the erie walleye spawn on shallow reefs in the lake itself...not the river. the michigan and ohio dnr has put checks into place to prevent over harvest.
long story short, most people who call it snagging either haven't tried it because they are too lazy, or they think they are ranger rick and know more than fisheries biologists. i suppose we shouldn't catch gills in june or fish for steelhead in april either. most people that catch fish out of the maumee are good fishermen that have spent alot of time and experimentation to find out what methods work, when they work, and what holes and runs hold fish. if you are not one of these fishermen, don't be an ignorant and label it snagging...and most of all, KNOW THE FACTS.

90 percent of maumee's fish do not go to huron. there are 3 distinct migration routes for huron /sandusky fish .most go in a big circle from northwest to canada and back down to roost come fall. there is a good number that go through the det. river system but many of those fish are natives or canadian thames/ruscom fish. 90 percent is too high a number for reef spawners. most of the large females wind up in a river environment.imagine every river in the erie/st. clair, saginaw, huron system including detroit,st.clair and the canadian feeders.all of them produce walleye and most of the fish circle their home territory in some way unless the food is scarce.why do you think that we fish the runs of large spawners every year in the saginaw, trenton channel, maumee, raisin, vermillion, thames, ruscom ,and st. clair.some years like 3 years ago, trenton had a great run, last year it stunk.these are local fish returning home.the detroit has a local home population that can be caught year round.i have spent 20 years trying to get a grasp of the walleye population and i have just scratched the surface. do not oversimplify their movements

You guys can argue all you want about 'eyes, and over-harvesting but here's the facts. (In-fisherman, 2005 Walleye Guide, Great Lakes Walleye declining numbers article) In 1990 the Michigan and Ohio DNR's estimated Lake Erie's walleye population at 90 million. This year the population is estimated to be lucky to reach 25 million. It's fallen every year. The catch and creel reports are getting worse and worse every year as well. This article also takes some of the blame away from invasive species as well. New research has found that zebra mussel's actually redeposit fertility to the lake bottoms, and egg predation by gobies is now believed to not be as bad as first thought, almost a non factor. So why the reduction in numbers? That is the question. Hmm...

...that the cormorants are affecting the fish numbers more than the general public is informed. we should be more concerned about these birds than ourselves for "over-harvesting" our game fish species.
that's my answer to fish eaters' question....."so why the reduction in numbers?"

i have seen the reports and do agree that the numbers are down somewhat but not as low as the estimates. its just like the deer herd.you can estimate wrong.the walleye numbers were pegged low to get canada to stop netting an unfair take.we agreeed to close seasons on erie as a prevenitive measure because of 2 very bad spawning years (i.e. lake huron too ) durring the drought and a few years non-existant in catch rates.the fish numbers have rebounded substantially as witnessed by the huge numbers of small walleye caught last year.i spent all summer on the lake and had a very good year. i have fished it every year since 1984 and this was an average to above average year by all accounts.we had an unacceptable catch rate combined with a huge net take from canada.you should have been there to witness the haul like i was.i was in canada last summer and the smelt are back in a big way ,the steelhead are exploding in population and the walleye are coming on strong.like all fisheries ,this one needed some tweeking.luckily , the resource managers did some prevenitive measures and got bailed out by mother nature.maumee will have a great year just based on the water flow.trust me on this one. :coolgleam

i am hoping to be fishing the maumee river this saturday for the first time. the outfit i plan to be fishing with is as follows:
7' meduim action spinning rod. Okuma spinning reel (10 bearings) spooled with 8lb test berkely sensation. rigged on this will be a carolina rigged floating chartreuse/orange jig head on an 8lb leader of berkely vanish fluorocarbon.
i am planning on using splitshot for my weight, instaed of the normal egg style sinker so i can adjust the weight without completely re-tying the rig. i have several other colors of jigs, but was told to start out with something highly visible.
any of you regular maumee river veterans want to chime in and critique my set-up? all tips and directions will be appreciated....thanks in advance.

you are gonna lose too much stuff. do the eggsinker rig with a lighter leader and 10 pound mainline or youre gonna be retying too much. youll get frustrated with split shot rig and it won't cast far enough.half ounce egg sinker, 18 inch leader, orange extra big floater with a 3 inch twister in white.or chart jig and twister depending on clarity and sky conditions.or my secret rig. three eights no snagg sinker with floater rig.if the water is low and clear. a quarter ounce jig and 3 inch twister on the mainline, you can add split shot to this rig..

hey ,someone actually agreed with me.the rain is the best thing for turning these fish on.it will also load the river with fish within 2 weeks.its a bit early right now,and you will probably catch all small males unless we get a warm rain. then watch out.any rod and reel will do but make sure the rod is tough. these snags fight hard.the reel can take a bit of abuse. i have had days of 30+ fish. my prediction is for both maumee and detroit to have a substantially better run than the last 2 years now that the drought is over.also ,with the late spring it will concentrate more fish in the river system over a shorter time span to spawn which means a short but very productive run if you are there right 2 weeks. the peak of the runs will be ,maumee-first week in april, detroit-2 weeks later.

Use smaller baits for sure spring walleye
Zoom
By STEVE POLLICK
BLADE OUTDOORS EDITOR
The annual spring walleye spawning runs on the Maumee and Sandusky rivers are improving after a slow start, and if you want to improve your catch-rate, think small.
That is the top advice of river-run veterans such as Gary Lowry, proprietor of Maumee Valley Bait and Tackle in Maumee. “Use small baits and work them slow,” he advises.
By small, he means a 1/8 to 3/8 ounce leadhead jig dressed with a two to three-inch plastic grubtail, or a floating jighead and tail, Carolina-rigged, using an egg sinker. Use just enough weight so that you can occasionally feel it”tick” the bottom.
Reliable colors include white, chartreuse, bright pink, and two-color combinations.
Lowry has promoted Carolina-rigged “floaters” in recent years, continually encouraging anglers to try it.
The increasing popularity of the rig is proof that it works.
He uses leaders of 18 to 24 inches behind a barrel swivel and egg sinker. A photo accompanying this article illustrates the Carolina rig, and a full discussion of the rig and other river tackle can be seen on the shop Web site, www.maumeetackle.net, under “fishing techniques.”
When Lowry uses traditional leadheads and needs more weight because of heavier current or because he is fishing a deeper run, he will pinch on a split-shot or two about 15 inches above the jig, rather than switch to a heavier jig.
In the case of either leadhead jig or Carolina floater rig, if you are snagging bottom too often, go lighter. If you never feel bottom, add weight.
A six-foot medium to medium-heavy spinning rod and 8-to 10-pound line is a standard, though some successful anglers use ultralights, 4-pound-test line, and teeny jigs. Others prefer baitcasting gear.
Another important Lowry tip: “It’s a light bite and you need to pay attention.” That means concentrating on the drifting line and watching the rod tip, which will dip lower when a fish takes the bait.
Direct your casts slightly upstream, so that the bait will drift to the bottom directly in front of you. Then just let it drift downstream, reeling up any slack and following it with your rod-tip.
“When in doubt set the hook,” Lowry notes.
River temperatures during the spring run are 40 to 50 degrees, plenty cold enough to develop potentially deadly, body-numbing hypothermia.
The Ohio Division of Watercraft recommends wearing a life jacket or floatation coat, whether in a small boat or wading. Dress in layers for the weather. Bring extra clothes. In short, be prepared.
Buy and wear the best chest waders you can afford. Cinch a belt snugly around the waist to prevent filling your waders if you fall in.
Carry a wading stick or staff. A pair of crampons or metal cleats, which fit over the wader boots, can improve traction on slippery bottom areas.
Be sure, too, that someone knows where you have gone and when you expect to return.
Maps accompanying this article show the most popular fishing stretches.
Remember, too, that walleye can run as far up the Maumee
as the Grand Rapids Dam. So some upstream sites may produce
fish, minus the crowds of eager anglers. Among places to try upstream are around the State Rt. 64 Bridge at Waterville, and the Miltonville and Van Tassel Public Access sites on State Rt. 65, and Otsego Park on Route 65 at State Rt. 235.
For updates on fishing conditions, check the Maumee Valley Bait and Tackle Web site above, or call the shop, 419-893-FISH. Another reliable bait shop is River Lures at Grand Rapids, operated by Chris
Martin, 419-832-0989. In Fremont call Anglers Supply, 419-332-6071. The Ohio Division of Wildlife toll-free fishing report is available at 1-888-HOOKFISH, and the Side Cut Metropark fishing report is available at 419-407-9731, option 1. The latter is a new number this year. Ohio Wildlife District 2 at Findlay can be reached at 419-424-5000.
Remember to obtain your new fishing license, that the daily creel limit is three walleye for March and April, that only a single hook is allowed in the special river zones and in Maumee and Sandusky bays until May 1, and that the minimum keeper length for walleye
is 15 inches.
Fishing in the special river zones is allowed only sunrise to
sunset until May 1. All snagged fish, that is, any fish not hooked
inside the mouth, must be released immediately. A full rundown on the fishing regulations is available at the state Web site, www.ohiodnr.com, or in the free pamphlet, digest of 2005-2006 Ohio Fishing Regulations, available wherever licenses are sold.
The runs on both rivers slowly have been cranking up as water temperatures move into the magic 40 to 50-degree range. Each successive warm rain, should bring up additional fish. The peaks of the runs still are expected during the first two weeks of April.
Only some 2003 fish, in the 12 to 16-inch range, are expected
because younger fish are not yet mature enough to spawn.
Fish from 2001 should be 17 to 20 inches, and those from 1999
about 20 to 24 inches. Some older trophy-size fish also are expected.
Last and certainly not least: Litter. Don’t.
Take a plastic grocery sack with you in your pocket and pick up trash and spent fishing line on your way back to the truck. Few things leave such a lasting, negative public impression about anglers as litter.
Lots of ethical fishermen already are picking it up. Good idea.

Good day finally off bluegrass island, took 2 hours to catch 3 and snag 2, took home a 24'', 23'' and a 16'' all males ! White worked best for me today, floating jig head with 3/8 egg sinker (carolina rig). Will be at the small parking lot also at 7:00am tomorrow. The river is up and I think the fish are finally BITING!!! Good luck and the game wardens are heavy this year, dont drink nowhere near the park. Littering is big with them too, got to keep it clean !! I'll be driving the dark blue gmc sonoma. Good luck !!! :fish:
took a limit in a little over an hour Easter morning about 200 yards down from the rapids at jerome rd. pink floater w/pink sparkle tail took all the fish. other colors yielded suckers and foul hooked eyes. nice healthy fish, 19, 20, and 22 inches. water was up about a foot, and with 60 degree temps coming in, this week should be the start of the peak run. bigmac picked the wrong morning to sleep in. i'd post a pic but don't know how.

Took another limit this morning on bluegrass island, more and more people taking limits now as the river keeps rising. White tails with green jigheads worked for me (floaters). Snagged another 2 or 3 fish, their in there and should get better everyday now. :)

Fished the rapids this morning. Caught 4 in less than an hour. The one was foul hooked, so back in he went. All males on flame red floaters, 3/8 lead. Sure was good to be in the water again. Tough current!

Remember in Ohio you can't drink in the metro parks .On the Maumee I think Side Cut Park may start at the end of White Street .Which is east of the Maumee Perrysburg Bridge all the way up to Jerome Rd past Side cut park . saw some get it for open container today by his car along the road.
saw a few fish cought . did not get any myself .water is still a little high and cold the wind did not help any ;)
In Ohio with the lower limits, can you fish 24 hrs a day? Co-worker mentioned something about 11- 4 were off limits, or they didn't fish that time since you couldn't park, or something. But he hasn't done the Maumee for many a few years. I guess if someone has a quick link to OHIO DNR??? Thanks.
Doooohhhh just read the full report on the previous page. Sunrise to Sunset. Thanks for the info.

Got to the river this morning and started fishing at 7:15, was back at the truck at 8:00, all good eating males, my third fish about ripped the pole out of my hands. Never snagged a fish today !!!!!!! Bright colors, pink, green and bright orange, CAUGHT 1 FISH ON EACH. Was fishing ''shroedres farms'' on route#65 straight across from bluegrass island, cost is $4 to park. My guess is the bite is on everywhere though, seen a couple guys from michigan park and I asked them if they were from the michigan sportsman club, and they said never heard of it :) I thought to myself, sorry about your luck ;) . The fish are in good now, come on down and get em..
is there anyplace where you can fish from shore and do well. i dont have waders, but i would like to try that river some day.

I would say you could fish from shore, as long as the water is high. Probably just find somewhere you'r not casting behind someone. :)

Jethro, trust me it all depends where you fish, I go to a spot where you have to pay to park, that means less people, more beers and good people. Oh yeah, and plenty of ''eyes''. I will share this spot with all you good people from up north. Good luck !!!! :fish:
