Today while out fishing on Higgins Lake I was going through my minnows trying to find a live one when I found something pretty interesting. It was a little walleye about 4" long and unfortunately dead as well. :(

What strange things have you guys found in you minnow buckets?

Seems like every summer at least once or twice there are some baby muskies mixed in with the minnows, especially when I get my minnows near or on the island...All of course released, unharmed...

It wasn't in the minnow bucket but, once while smelt dipping, I was busy filling the cooler with the help of my kids (I'd dip and the kids would empty the net), when I heard a guy in back of me say something like "....DNR dumped several thousand trout or salmon or something in here today......". Well, you guessed it, we opened the cooler, about 15 trout were swimming around in a sea of dead smelt :yikes: . We released them, and checked the net very closely from then on. I still wonder what the fine would have been if a C.O. would've walked up and checked that cooler. Capnhook

I have gotten baby bass, blue gills, crappie.... Also, at alot of baitshops they have a fish tank or something where they toss the "others" that get mixed in with the minnows. You will see all kinds of panfish, and small gamefish fry.

Once while at the Au Sable river we were netting bait by the dam at night. We ended up throwing back tons of walleye and pike fry.

I wish I would have noticed it sooner so I could have put it in my 30 gallon aquarium.

my buddy went to some random baitshop and they had like reddish looking minnows! i forget what they were called but they were legal for bait they only had a couple because they didnt know if they would seel or not so my friend only got like 2 to test them n said they worked pretty good (just my 2 cents)

I have gotten what looks like a good minnow but when one of them dies, in the live well, all the fins stick out and they are all sharp. I have no Idea what type of a minnow it is.

Ahh Rosy reds, alot of pet stores carry those for feeder fish. I used to feed a dozen to my oscars every other day.

Ed, It may be the three spined stickleback. You can kind of see the spines on the top(the M-S logo kind of hides them). I used to catch them all the time in the creek behind my house when I was younger. We used to get them quite a bit with minnows when I was growing up.

I used to catch them in a creek by me when I was growing up. Even had a few in my fish tank for a while.
