Can anyone give me some advice on a good setup for targeting walleyes off tipups? Should I even bother using a tip up for eyes or just stick with the rod and reel combo, and save the tip up for pike?
I'll be fishing Houghton this wkend and next week.
Mainly I need to know how I need to run my leader and weight from my main line(the thread type line that is on most tip ups). Do I need to use a swivel and egg sinker for fishing off bottom for eyes?
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks
I've always had good luck with a nice long 10-15 foot (MONO) 20-30lb Vanish leader tiped with a BLACK coated steel leader. Got a few eye's last weekend out fo Sage lake near hale on that set up, and eye's a VERY rare there, so I figure I'm doing something right. I don't use anyweight, and the swivel on the steel leader seems to work fine on my tipups. Hope it helps, Hank

We use about 4-5 feet of mono leader with a swivel between your main line and leader. About a foot above your hook (we use triple #12's) use a small splitshot. Purpose of split shot is to get your minnow to the bottom and keep it from swimming up too high and tangling up your swivel/main line. If you don't and especially if you are using grays, they will tangle your line eventually.
Rig similar to this for lake trout, only use an egg sinker on your main line above swivel to get it to bottom. Old spark plugs hooked on your hook to get it to bottom work good too, instead of the egg sinker.

I have mine set up with a 1-2ft leader of 8lb sometimes 6lb. vanish, attached to 20lb. main braided line by a barrel swivel. use 8-12 size trouble depends on size of bait. put a split shot just above the swivel. Also have a very small plit shot on the line, by the line guide for a marker. when you get fish to bite you can put it back down to the same spot evertime.

You should try using small clip on bobbers for marking your depth, it works very well. It's probably easier to take on and off and wont crimp your line.
