Ok Ck. Ebay and garage sales. the best reel IMO is a new A&S The others will work but If you get an A&S reel you might have to get it re-lubed in about 30 years. they won't tangle like the river-rats ect. Keep in mind, all will work if you get a good deal jump on it. the shanks and sinkers are cheep. as far as line use good heavy line 30 to 35 lb whatever brand 5 bucks a spool. Some guys get fancy on line but all will get fish. I use small enough swivels to allow the raps to move free. as far as the tackle. #9 raps is all you'll need to start out. (jointed or borken back alao) you'll need one of each but two of each are better. **all originals *floating* first the classic black and silver. my next would be firetiger, next orange/gold and nice to have blue/silver and chartreuse/white.
That will get you into fish. you'll need a bunch of leads tied up. lets say 5 to 10 --- 15' foot leads and the same in 30 foot. (if you get a mess don't play around trash it and get a new lead) When you head out Take a river rat for a boat ride or get your 2 way and bump me on the river. Handliners will help other handliners on the river. (just don't croud them wait until they move to chat) you can also follow one (at a distance) to get your angles and speed right. good luck
PS: don't look for the fancy boat with all the gear. A few years back 2 guys in a big lund with everything including handline gear talked with me at the dock they were kind of cocky when I told them where and what ,esp when they saw I hand nothing in my boat but a cooler. no net no rods no takckle box. They found me 20 min's later with two Nice fish I showed them .I told them what I was doing. I left after my 6th fish. they worked good and looked good doing it but headed down river after I pulled up my limit :) and left. (I was back in one hr.)

When you guys do a search on e-bay how do you find them? I've done it a number of time and come up with nothing! Thanks.

Thats because they are usually not on there too much. Best bet is garage sales, alot of old timers don't have the internet and are not posting them on ebay. But they will sell them in garage sales.

Keeep garage searching, last year coming home early on a friday, deciding i didnt want to go home right away. First place i stopped at, a grandson of an old river rat was selling equipment labled ice fishing equipment. He obviously didnt know what he had, there was a old sled, fishing poles, and some other stuff. I open the sled box, and inside was a old A&S hand line reel, and next to it was a cedar box. inside the ceder box was a old Victrolla style hand liner box.......It was a find of the year.....
I got a custom made ice fishing box, A&S reel, Antique Victrolla, and ice fishing poles all for the low price of $20.00, talked down from $30.00, just cause im a Salesman, i never buy for face value. I would have gave him $200.00.
So keep checking those garage sales in Warren, Royal oak, Mad hts., where alot of old people still live, you can find alot of old Fishing equipment.

What is a reasonable price to pay for used reels in a garage sale?
Hotwired
03-06-2005, 01:11 PM
Depends what kind. I've spent up to $200. for some of mine.
If it works and isn't too beat up:
A&S - $50.
RedCap - $50
GoldCrap - $20
Schaller - $75
Kachman - $50
RiverRat - $50
These are the most popular that you will find out there.
If you find any others besides what's listed buy it and then call me. ;)

Man those are Zola's plugs, those IMO are the best. I didn't think you could get those anymore. Don't spend your money in the store get the Zolas. I purchased a truck load years ago in fear he wouldn't be around to make more.

Don't look now but there are 2 A&S reels on ebay, they look brand new. Starting bid is $20 for the pair. You can have them now for $130. Looks like a pretty good deal for someone in need of reels.
Hey Ed what's a Zola?

Here it is
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=1494&item=7140272189&rd=1
You can't have them now for $130, there is no buy it now. He is just being nice and told you what the reserve is. If there was a buy it now.........They would have been gonners :D . Anyway these will probly go for some coin.
I can't believe people resort to ebay, he's from new baltimore, he could of joined here and sold them in a second for that price. Think he just wants to see how much they'll go for. I got them on my watch list.

Wall-llard Willie,
I buy many hand reels from Ebay and know many of the other collectors out there. The pair of A&S reels do not have a "buy it now" of $130. If they did the would be in my garage already. :) They have a reserve of $130. meaning he won't sell until the bid hits $130. It's a sure bet that these reels will fetch over $200 for the pair.
Sorry for the repeated info, Andy types faster than me.

I am wondering were it says in the ad that these need to be shortend up because the plastic has come off. How do you do this or do you have to put new wire on them. Thanks
Hotwired
03-11-2005, 01:16 PM
There are several ways to do this.
If you are just cutting off a couple of feet then you can just pull it out, cut it off and recrimp.
If you are putting on new line then the tension screw on the side needs to be loosened and the line put on and then the spool wound again for tension.

"Watch out for the sinker... The bastard's jumpin' again!" :hide:

I just took a look and those A&S reels on e-bay are over $200 now. I have a feeling that they will bring $225, maybe more who knows. Lucky I waited.....
Andy Capp and I attended the Southgate Fishing Show/Swap Meet (sponsored by the DWF and Huron Steelheaders) this morning.
Got there nice and early and bought two used A&S reels (Blue) for $150.
The guy that I bought them from sells A&S reels and replaces his reels every season.
They were used one season and were brand new except for a couple of scratches. I think they were a deal at $75 a piece. :evilsmile
If anyone is looking for a new A&S, I know Bottom Line and Hook, Line and Sinker have new and at least one (red) used A&S. I can also give you the number to the guy that I talked to today. He is located downriver.

Really? And for what reason?
The information I sent to Mike H was in a PM and not posted here for all to read.
I do not know they guy selling the reels I mention and certainly am not selling anything just passing the word to someone who is looking for a reel.
What did I do wrong?
SabikiRig,
Hotwired is refering to a post I made listing some hand lining reels for sale. He was right and I moved the post to the classified forum. It was right before his post.
Now Hotwired's reply to my post looks like a reply to SabikiRig's post.
Sorry for the confusion

i've never fishied with a handline but i saw some guy doing it and while we trolled around him catchin one here and there he caught his limit and left before we caught 3! so i've been wanting to try this but it sounds expensive... what all do u need besides the hand reels? and can anything else be used as a hand reel? like an old downrigger? look like they are designed the same.. maybe im just a rookie though.. and is there a picture or how the rig is set up?
thank you

You need a spring loaded device like a reel or a victrola box to take up the wire as you retreive it.
