I would invite you to a Muskie 101 seminar at Gander Mountain but there isn't one in Traverse City this year.
I would be more than happy to talk to you by e-mail.
If you are interested just drop me note.

I'm not sure how Will feels on this one, but you really don't need specialized gear to start for muskies. Bass equipment will do fine, at first (though you'll stress more fish with light equipment). Steel leaders even out the odds. Probably the most important piece of equipment, if you are going to do it with care and dignity, is an oversized, rubber-coated net. I use a Frabill that's large enough to net my well-fed boat partner. It's absolutely crucial to carefully handle and release good fish. Outside that, muskie fishing is mostly about getting on good water. St. Clair is the best we have, and boasts probably the highest muskie success rate in the country. Inland lakes are okay, but fish are generally smaller and more difficult to catch, because of pressure.
Big lures are fine, however expensive and unnecessary. My largest fish, just shy of 40 pounds, came on a 3-inch crankbait. And yes, I was fishing for muskies. Get out there and pound some high-percentage water, and if you like what happens, invest in more sturdy equipment.

Long needle nose pliers, small bolt cutters are helpful after you hook a Hog.

I'll take all the free advice I can get. I plan on attending the seminar in Saginaw on the 12th, plus I still have a Gander gift card leftover from Christmas that's burnin a serious hole in my wallet! See ya there.
