I go to CMU and this morning as I was walking to get something to eat I saw a table set up with these two old ladies wanting people to sign petitions to ban the dove season. They had their signs up all over of the helpless little doves. They asked about everyone that came by to sign the petitions.

Unfortunatly quite a few people were signing them. This is what happens when these activists take advantage of people who know nothing about the subject. A 19 year old girl from Detroit walks by and sees a picture of the cute little dove and decides that they shouldnt be hunted. She nows nothing about the subject or conservation, but she will sign the petition anyways.

These are the kinds of people that we are faced with, and like it or not we have to battle these people the rest of our lives in order for future generations to experience the American heritage of hunting.

I am from the great state of North Carolina where I never missed a opening day dove hunt. Opening day of dove season down there is ALMOST like November 15th in Michigan. Its a shame the whole state of Michigan doesnt allow a dove season cause my dad would be able to plant a good field here in mid-Michigan and we would be able to have one hell of a good time. However, at least Michigan took a big step in giving hunters more opportunites this year with the southern counties opening a hunt.

By the way when I walked by the table I was just waiting for that woman to ask me to sign. When she did I looked at her and said "i shoot them doves just as fast as i can reload my gun!" She put her fingers in her ears and turned her back. I guess she will go and get more people to sign that dont even know what the hell a dove is.

Chuck, I have found that if you stand there and counter their arguments, most people will just walk by. Even if you can only spare a few minutes, tell the old ladies you have all day to stand there......I've had them pack up immediately and head for another location.

Neal,

I know just what you mean. They were up at the place I vote in Nov.with their petition and asked me to sign.I didn't get ugly, but debated it with them for 10-15 minutes while everyone else just walked by not signing and when I left the polls they seemed to have lost their desire to stand there. No one was talking to them and I saw them packing up their stuff to leave.

OK, This is what I would like to know. Has anyone living in the Counties open to Dove hunting seen any petitions or people pushing them? I even read of one lady in Marquette that was seaking names??
I live in Berrien County and I have yet to see one petition. Why does it seem that all the activist live no where near where the doves are being hunted? How come the people in my county don't seem to be so against it? Maybe I just have not been in the right place to see them. Let me know if anyone has seen any of this around here.

I have seen the "petition drivers"(I live in Kalamazoo County) They were set up at the the voting area...pestering people as they went in to vote! (i think that should be illegal) Trust me...the fight is NOT over! We will be voting on this in 2-3 years...you can bet! The best thing we can do is to take people out and show them how great this little game bird is to hunt and EAT! Buy a stamp....even if you don't hunt them! The more exposure the better the chance that we can pass the bill for the rest of Michigan!

The Lansing State Journal (non hunting supporter) had a story on the front page Monday about the little old lady from Okemos that is the head of the petition drive because she doesn't want anybody to shoot the doves on her feeder, like that could happen. Some how they called me for an interview and most of the pro hunting views I started didn't make the paper. She goes through the dorms here at MSU and signs up supporters. You know what would happen if you or me tried to go through the dorms for signatures we would be in jail!

Being a former Residence Life employee at MSU...It's not legal for ANYONE to go through the dorms like she's doing (anti-hunting, pro-hunting, or whatever else someone wants to collect signatures for). At least it wasn't a few years ago. I'd have thrown her out had I caught her in my hall.

Next time take her some freshly cooked dove breast that have been barbaqued and wrapped in bacon. If she taste those morsels she will be the first one to buy a licsense.

Make up some dove recipe posters and hang them over the posters that they put up on campus.

I'm a CMU Alumni and after reading this, I may have to cancel all future donations to CMU.

Glad to hear that you were in their face. They want to voice their opinion in a form of a petition, then you have every right to voice your opinion!

Rich

let me know if they are still there by Friday and I may have to make a trip to visit my old campus.

I saw one of these types at U of M, on north campus none the less! (away from that horrided central campus filled with loony activists of all kinds. Found this food inbetween classes looking bored as could be at a weakly setup display table. I would have stopped to pick his brain on the subject and find out if he was really doing this for a purpose or if he was being paid to do it (from that ad posted a while back). However, I had to be on my way so I just gave a disaproval shaking of the head in a "NO" manner answering his banner of "stop shooting doves" and his potential "will you sign" with a huge grin on my face. Really wish I would have had my camo hat on that day. :)

Better yet I should of shared with them the pictures that I have of me (12yrs old at the time) cleaning a mess of doves after the opener. They would of liked to seen a bunch of rednecks acting responsible and having a good time in the outdoors. I'll have to try to post some of those pics on here, you guys will get a kick out of them.

This woman replied.....Greed behind dove season.....they just want another license fee. Says shes been feeding doves 20 years,Doves cant provivde more than 3 bites, Anybody trying to get this law past [prior to the season] is not a hunter. They just want to kill something. My doves cant shoot back but I will.....

THAT is the mentality we are facing. The womans from the Moon.

Took a pysch class(college) last semester, We read an article about the Animal Rights movement.. It gave quite the insight...especially the part of who these people are.......early thirtys, white, women, Higher income, education, etc, etc... etc..I I find it very Ironic for people being so smart yet so stupid. The hypocrisy behind the movement is huge....you cannot live in this world today without the life and death cycle. How many bugs are killed each year from somebody driving a car! How many plants do vegetarians kill each year? You treat sickness with antibiotics...are you not killing some sort of "animal"!

They were here at Grand Valley too on Monday. Actually it was some old guy. He asked me to sign...I said what for? Well to stop dove hunting of course. I said, "Well, if doves weren't meant to be hunted then why did God make them taste so good?"

Then he mentioned something about 200,000 of them being shot in Michigan...I was able to counter that easily because I was just on the DNR website earlier and it said only 28,000 something were taken. I even whipped out my laptop and wireless internet to pull up the page to show him. I just went back and forth there for about 20 minutes...watched about 200 people walk by. I think I could have done better but I was already late for class.

Yes, they are all hypocrites. :bash: I've known a few personally and it amazess me how they have a problem with my fishing and hunting, yet they have no issues what so ever putting their house cats outside for extended periods even when they bring back small mammals on a quite regular basis and leave them on the porch. It also amazes me how they eay soy in the form of a burger, and yet can't stand the sight or smell of meat. They honestly make 0 amount of sense IMO my book.

It is not just vegetarians, there are plenty of meat eaters that are opposed to hunting. Obviously, most people know where meat comes from, but probably give very little thought to it.

Bottom line.....anybody that hasn't tried it(hunting) is more likely to be against it than for it. The growth of our citys will be the downfall of our traditions.....I believe England just outlawed the use of dogs for hunting. I read an article about it on MSN.com. Protect our heritage.....share the outdoors!

Anti-Hunting Activists Seek To End Michigan Dove Hunt

Friday, March 04, 2005 A recent e-mail alert from the Humane Society of the United States announced that the effort to end dove hunting by putting it to a statewide vote is nearly complete. HSUS has been gathering signatures since the day the bill was signed into law. In their e-mail HSUS claims to have gathered 170,000 signatures, nearly enough to put the measure on the ballot. They have until March 15 to submit their signatures for verification. If HSUS is successful in banning dove hunting through the ballot process, rest assured that they will be back to ban other types of hunting. Michigan is one of 41 states that has a season for America`s most plentiful game bird. Please visit www.NRAILA.org for developments on this issue.

Well, it's March 16th now, has anyone heard if the anti-dove hunters were successful in getting the required number of signatures? The article I read in the local paper a couple of weeks back said that they were averaging 1,500-2,000 signatures a week, so my guess is that they fell short. I sure hope so, I just bought my new 2005 small game license today and added the Dove Stamp to it. :D

I was at Borders yesterday picking up a few books at Borders books (Stories of Old Duck Hunters trilogy) on Washtenaw Ave in Ann Arbor and thought I would run next door to Petco to pick up some dog food. And sure enough, when I was at the checkout counter there was a big sign asking to donate to HSUS and the clerk asked if I would like to donate as I place my recent books that I had just purchased on the counter and said to him, they support anti-hunting right? He knew exactly where I was going and commented I understand and left it at that. A couple of other clerks were standing there and mentioned that occasionally there are anti-dove hunters standing outside the store begging for signatures.
My local mill hasn't recieved my order of dog food yet otherwise I would have never went into Peta..I mean Petco.

Note how close this is to Michigan's situation.

Anti-Hunters Attack Minnesota Dove Hunting!

Tuesday, March 22, 2005
Representative Michael Paymar has introduced a bill to ban dove hunting in Minnesota. HB 1311 would end hunting for America`s most popular and prolific game bird. Dove hunting was legalized by the legislature last year and the first season was held last September. Please call your legislators and urge them to oppose this bill.

HSUS, the most aggressive anti hunting group in the US. More aggressive towards hunting than even PETA as far as I am concerned. They are the ones funding this petition drive.

The US govt. has labeled several animal rights organizations as being "domestic terrorists". PETA, the HSUS, and several other national groups are suspected of donating directly to some of these terrorist groups (according to some of what I have read over the years).

So, supporting the Dove Hunting Initiative by signing their petition is indirectly giving moral support to known domestic terrorist groups. It would get even worse if they made a monetary donation.,

My wife just tells them that the petition is badly worded and will not sign. She then asks them who wrote it and if the signature gatherer can understand it. And, while they stand there thinking about whether they understand the wording she walks away.
