Does anyone have any experience on the Bay say after a cutter goes through? Does it render the bay useless for icefishing, or basically just the channel that gets disrupted? I see on the weather channel that the cold temperatures are here to stay throughout Mar. 11 up there, so it looks like we'll have some more time if the cutter does not mess things up as a whole.

I think if they run a cutter out to the open water it will let the ice start to move like crazy, especially with a west wind. :yikes:
I know for a fact when cutters or ships go through ice on the Saginaw river it smashes it up pretty good.
I think they would only run a cutter out if a ship really needed to get into the river.
Hopefully we can stay on the ice out there as long as possible!

They usually won't run the cutter when conditions are like they are now anyway. Some of them jams out there are well over 4ft thick. It will happen eventually, but hopefully not for awhile yet.

News is the cutter is making way for some oil for a company in Bay city, Triple Fuel Systems or something. I belive the coast guard has to make a announcement a few days ahead before they just go cutting.

yea, ABC12 news said a week ago that the cutter was ready to come through to open the shipping channel in a few weeks. I also heard saginaw wants a shipment of road salt but they do not have any money to pay for it.

They have to plow the roads first before the salt goes down!

Man.....Ain't that the truth!!!! Gotta be the worst county in the state at keeping the roads cleared!!!
Anybody know where the cutter goes??? How far off shore?
Been too busy at work lately to hit the bay.....Gotta get up there one of these days!!

All I know is if the cutter goes through anytime soon, that's gonna be about it for my season. If you think those cracks are a hassle now.....just wait.

I check boatnerd.com every day. They usually post any movements of ships. Check the port reports section.

Heres the poop.
The cutter is scheduled to come into the Bay next Monday and Tuesday, the 7th and 8th of March. Like any other ship, the cutters have to stay in the channel. So don't worry about driving off into open water unless you are indeed near or lined up with the channel bouys. This cutting does disrupt the immediate area and maybe 50 yards each side of the cut. But as a whole, the surrounding areas stay put and strong unless some very strong winds move things around. This cut will heal fast if the cold weather stays below freezing and become strong enough again to hold things tight.
This post is not meant to be either a Red or Green light (and should not be taken as such) for anybody thinking of heading out on the Bay. As far as the Coast Guard is concerned, all ice is unsafe. :tdo12:
