flip69,
I lived in Cobourg, Ontario for 3 years and fished it regularly. Lots of fish, walleyes, smallmouth, largemouths, and muskies. And yet, the locals say that most Americans visiting target the panfish which there are plenty of. I loved this lake. I'd be willing to mark some spots on a map, as it brings back found memories. PM me.
Rice Lake is part of the Trent Waterway connecting many lakes, all different in makeup. Dependent on your length of stay, check out the various Kawartha Lakes, if not for fishing, then just for the scenery.
Unable to make any recommendations on places to stay.

You may want to contact SalmonSlayer from the site. His name is Ben and I believe he makes a trip up there every year for the bluegill fishing...he raves about it.
I would guess he may be able to point you in the right direction.
P.S. Here is a link to the post he made last year on the topic..

I have stayed at http://www.elmhirst.com/ several times. Seams their prices have gone up quite a bit. But is an excellent place with planned activities for the young ones. Last time I went we had a boat but sometimes just skipped a spinner bait over the pockets of weeds from the dock and would pull 2lbs bass out just about every cast. Caught a 5lbs bass with a 12" sucker out by one of the islands, thought I had a muskie. Not much of a pan fisher but other groups would load baskets full of them and hook up a hose and tumble the scales off. There is an old railroad tie sumerged under the water, should be listed on a map of the lake, watch your prop.

I've gone up to Rice Lake for the past couple of years, we originally went there to catch walleye but we did not have much luck with them so we switched to bluegill, the first year we were up there we had a lot of big gills but the following year we did not do so well on the large gills but we still caught a lot of fish. We also had incidental catches of big smallmouth bass while we were fishing for those bluegills but it was before the season started. Both years we stayed at Adventure Bay, which was not bad but there was not a lot of things for the kids to do. Hope this helps.

Rice Lake, eh. Hm, me see I fish it every year for largemouth and for some of those huge panfish called Sunfish. We stay on the Otonomy River which empties into Rice lake. We also fish the Otonomy for all species. Have caught some really nice bass and had muskie on, etc. Most Americans go for the bluegill of which there are plenty. On the lake we use a small rubber worm with a spinner on the front and tip it with a wax worm.....the panfish kill it.
We generally go over the first week of August because it is a holiday and our relatives are off. The place we stay at is on the Otonomy and rather pricey, although my inlaws don't think so. There are several resort cottages along the Otonomy. They supply us with a nice place to stay, a boat and all the gas.
My problem is I can't think of the name of the cottages. I will email my inlaws and ask them if it is something you might be interested in. PM me is you wnat the name of the cottages. I have already sent in for my Canadian fishing licence. Something you need to think about doing before you go over.
GREAT FISHING AT RICE LAKE :fish:

help
I've gone to Rice Lake now close to 30 years. It's there we take the kids to learn to fish. Lots of action for the little guys. We always go during our Memorial Day Weekend. We usually catch as many panfish(bluegills and sunfish) as we want to clean. Some years we do OK on perch but its more of a hit or miss deal. Lately crappie are beginning to show up in numbers. Years ago we'd catch enough walleyes to bring home our limit. Lately the walleye fishing(at least for us) has drasticly declined. Last year we caught only one walleye. We stay at Elm Grove Cottages(been staying there for alot of years). They're just off the Otonabee River. Good people and decent places to stay. We've always bought our licenses there and would assume most resorts sell licenses. Anything else I can help you with send me an email. Blue
