Has anyone replaced the points and condensor in an older OMC (1975-25hp). I have a clymers manual but its not very clear. The guys over at I-boats insist a point gap of 0.020" and I agree. Just wondering if anyone has any tips or is this a pretty straignt forward type of repair? any help would be appreciated.

I have done a few different engines. Seems cut and dry if you ever replaced any on any engine. I always went by this in the way of gaps: coil to flywheel gap--.10 points---.20 spark plug---.30

For a used points 0.020 and 0.022 for new points. other than that just what Mike said!
If you are just adjusting the points then you should have a plate that you can remove from the flywheel to set them, but if you are going for a full service of the ignition system then you will want to pull the flywheel.

Thanx guys I plan on a complete tune-up Points condesor driver coil and ignition coils. I don't plan to own this 1975 evinrude forever but it has to run well while I have it. I use this motor on my duck boat and my duck boat doubles as my salmon and walleye fishin' boat. Off shore in the great lakes is no place for a motor with week spark!

I just switched my 71 OMC to electronic with a converter plate... very in expensive and don't have to worry about points any longer.

lol i have now done 3 of those motors in the past week coils points condensors. a 57 johnson seahorse a 68 rude fast twin and a scottyhoovers 18 hp sea-horse all the same after a few stumbles i can now do em in my sleep. one question flywheel to coil gap i just line the coil up with the edge of the mounting block it sets on no way to gap em i can tel,l no access for feelers just put em back right where the old ones were worked just fine.
