Sunday took my 13 year old (Jake) for one last squirrel hunt. Went to a little honey hole that we hadn't been to for a few weeks after the temp warmed up a bit. Venturing into the woods we didn't see much sign, nothing moving and tracks were pretty scarce. We sat near an old den tree that usually produces but not this day. We decided to go back in the woods further where a harvested corn field joins up to the woods. Good move. The closer we got to the field the more tracks we found. Deer and squirrel both were coming into this field. (Lets not get into the baited hunt issue here :) ). We came to the edge of the field where a treeline met the main woods. Standing there for a few minutes I had a nice Fox squirrel pegged about 60 yards away. Feeling pretty good about my abilities because I had recently re-sighted in the scope I used a small tree for a rest and nailed our first one. We picked that one up and proceeded to follow the edge of the cornfield keeping our eyes open for movement. We spotted another one up in the branches acting like he was picking acorns off. I told Jake to sneak up on it and try to get into 20 gauge range. He made it a little ways before the squirrel eyed him and ran to the main trunk of the tree. We ran up to keep him treed and Jake spied him hugging in a crotch. Brought him down with one shot. When he shot, another one we hadn't seen popped out on my side and I got off a quick freehand shot that brought him down. Ideally I would of chosen to sit and wait for the squirrels to come to us but 13 year olds like to keep moving. We decided to call it a day after picking up the two even though we thought we could of found a couple more.
