Quick Question,

Are silver bass any good to eat? Been catching alot of these lately in the River and I got to admit, they put up a pretty good fight for a small fish. These bass are all in the 1/2 pound range.

Thanks in advance
-Kyle

What river were you fishing? Location? Bait? Any info would be appreciated. I love fishing for White Bass. You are right, their fight is top notch. I usually just release them, never tried them on the table.

I am fishing in the St.Clair river, these fisty little guys are just "smacking" my shinners. They must travell in schools because some days I am getting 15 to 20 of these guys in less then 30 minutes than they seem to disapear for a day or so. I think I might take Splitshot's advice and keep a few for the dinner table.

Split-

The tale about the catfish was entertaining, but how did that relate to its overall taste????? Did you eat it or take mercy on it for the week of plight that was caused by your oversight?

just kidding

Mordenk,

You are correct. Silver (White) Bass do travel in schools. When these schools fall upon a school of minnows or shad, the reak absolute havoc. I am talkin a literal bloodbath. That is why you absolutely lace them when you find em while fishing with shiners. This is also why this fish has often been indentified as a nuisance by walleye anglers, specifically on the Detroit River when Silver Bass run in the late spring.

I have never eaten one, however I have heard they are quite tasty. I have also heard that when they are smoked, they are as tasty as any trout or salmon.

FISH ON!!!

Well Guys,

I went out this morning after work and got two nice walleyes and 4 bass. I also got 3 silver bass and I put these shiny guys on Ice right away like splitshot suggested. I am please to say that When I cleaned them this morning the meat was so firm that I didn't get one bone in the filets. I actually had all 6 filets this morning for breakfast with some eggs and potatoes and man they were pretty tastey. They had a slight sweet taste almost simular to a BLue Gill. In closeing I would like to send my condolences out to all of America for that "horrific" tragety that occurred on Tuesday. I was glad to see all the American and Canadian flags flying at half mast this morning. My Two flags (American and Canadian) will continue to fly at half mask untill the people and the country responsible have been severly punished for this Tragity.

Splitshot,

I actulaly use an electric knife (Old turkey knife). The blade is suraded but I am looking into buying a new one for next spring(Don't do much ice fishing). I would like to say thanxs for the advice on the silver bass. I have found that they are actually a very nice tasteing fish. Tomorrow if I get any I will pull up shop right away if I can get a few of these bass and I will try cleaning them right away. How do you suggest cooking these fish? I fried these guys in hot butter with a little salt'n pepper. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

My Dad smokes all the SIlver Bass that we catch while walleye fishing. It is a heavily fishy fish, but smokes up excellent. It stays moist even when well cooked. I ice them immediately upon catching them. I caught numerous monster sheepshead this year on Lake Erie, and my Dad has smoked them. They are fair smoked, but really smell up the cooler, so I don't keep them anymore.
