Hey there Guys,
Well, there I was ALL by my self on Green Lake at about 3:00am. I went in the 40 foot depths, and started marking fish on my Vexilar ProPack. I dropped the tear Drop down, and using the AUTO ZOOM, I saw the FISH come upto my Tear Drop, and Bing, Bing went the Spring Bobber. I must have pulled in 15, 14" Silvery Fish, about 1-2" High, and when they came out of the hole, they were FLIPPING like Crazy..
Can SOMEONE please tell me what type of Fish is this?
Thanks.
Steve..

If they weren't so long I'd say smelt. However I have no clue if that lake holds them. Just sounds like them from the description.
Those would be some monster smelt!

I had the same thing happen to me last year on Rainbow Lake. I found out from a local up there that they were cisco and I'm pretty sure thats what you were catching.

Here is a link to the fish atlas on the DNR's website that may help you I.D. the fish you caught.

GRTrapper.....I'm thinking they are probably cisco's. Was out on Green Lake a few weeks ago and seen a few pulled through the ice. Those are some fine eating!!

Don't know anyhting about Kent's Green Lake...but if GVSU is talking about the Rainbow Lk. in Gratiot county then I think those are gizzard shad or silver shiners. Had a colleague who lives on Rainbow Lake tell me about catching a bunch of them last year. I believe Rainbow is a bit too eutrophic to support cisco--generally a cold-water species.

If you can't find it in the guide then there are no size or possession limits. It falls under the "all others" note at the bottom of the General Hook & Line regulations for coolwater fish.

Look at the bottom of the page!! :yikes:
If they're cisco, they go by the lake herring(cisco)/whitefish limits. 12 per day. Used to be there was no limit. I remember the old timers on Mullett Lake having 100+ fish days--long gone now. Wonder why?
Smoked cisco is great, but they're tasy fried as well. Same as a whitefish

I used to go up off of Drummond Island and catch those suckers. Great eating fish. Was a great time, you get in a cluster with 20 other boats or so and have a party.
