Going up yo houghton lake next weekend for our annual walleye fest!! a buddy and myself will be heading up friday and stay for around 10 days of walleye fishing....with the way we have been catching them the last few weekends ...looks like we should have a great time and plenty of fish!! I was told that after this week it may be snowmobile only for any long distance runs because of snow depths  This is good news to keep a few of the rather noisy people away from the area , so as to keep it quiet and keep the walleye on the feed!! The only time we do not do any good at this spot was when the Noisy ones would be out there...driving all around non stop....howling and acting like children....and then wondering how come the fish were not bitting! ??? They just do not have a clue !! If anyone is going to be up there...let me know......maybe we can get together to get a few eyes for the last week of the season!

My spring break starts this friday evening!! I want to get up to Houghton several times during the wkend and the following week. I want to target walleyes as well. Only problem for me is that I have no sled. Hope either a quad will work or a 4x4 blazer to get around.

From what I am hearing, after this week it may be snowmobile only...but that is probably only if you plan on heading out farther into the lake....usually along the shoreline itgets pretty packed down!! Out from the cut river is usually my best spot this time of year......walleye group up there to spawn up the river and many pike gathering there also!! Got my picture in the Houghton lake Resorter a couple of years ago with a nice 10 lb. pike right there!!

Fished Houghton on Saturday, drove out to middle grounds for a mixed bag of fish.Packed down roads out from shore. No problem driving 4x4 Blazer. Over 2' of ice.
Fishing was slow but some really nice gills, crappie and a couple keeper walleye. Several sublegal pike on tip ups.

Anyone know a good website that shows a good map of Houghton Lake?

I've gotta get prepared to do some fishing next week while im on spring break. With the way this weather is going the rivers are out of the question for me.

Five of us will be up there this weekend too, lord willing, and will be fishing for walleyes and pans at the middlegrounds. Look for a couple of 4 wheelers and a group of five guys w/3 fish traps. Stop by for a chat and teach us how to fish!

Chuck N Buck,

www.michigannorth.com (http://www.michigannorth.com) has numerous inland lake maps that you can print out.

On the home page, click on "fish" at the top of the page and then click on "inland fishing maps" on the second page.

Hope this helps,
Rick

I like the "Hot Spot" maps you find at the BPS, Frank's, Jay's and other outdoor stores........

would anyone have some gps #'s for the middle grounds. after some searching I figured out how to convert feet (from the hot spots map) to long and lat for my globalmap GPS but would like to cross ref to some #'s if someone would help me out. I hope to skate off from work tomorrow and check it out. Thanks in advance,

Thanks for the map info guys. They are both good, i think the chamber map is the best.

Does anyone know what time Zagers baitshop opens in the morning?

the only problem with the maps are.....they are wrong with a few of the depths!....doesn't show little round.......and another shallow area......if you look at the hotspots map there are are few areas that are different! that they do not even list on these!

What time does Zager's bait shop open on Saturday mornings?

Has the gill/crappie fishing picked up any on Houghton lately? Whats the snow situation look like on the ice now?

Im thinking about trying Houghton on Saturday, havent fished it yet this year but love to fish this lake.

Im thinking about trying Houghton on Saturday, havent fished it yet this year but love to fish this lake.I usually get there around seven and he's there. Jeff mentioned he's been open at 6 or a little after on the weekends, especially since he live's right there and he gets a lot of traffic. From the trail reports I've read there's lots of snow, dont know how the quads will do up there this weekend. I'd give him a call and see if he's got his road plowed out to the middle grounds.

Good Luck! Please post your results when you get back so us poor fishermen that cant make it find out what we missed! ;)

Spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning on the middlegrounds. Caught a few hammerhandle pike. Panfishing was slow with a 2.5 day total of 47 gills and crappie. All very nice sized, but for six of us fishing that is only about 7.83 fish per person. Not very good, but according to Lymans we did as well or better than anyone else.

It's a good thing that the catching is not what fishing is all about. We had a wonderful time, the three bedroom cabin that we rented from Lymans was great and we will be back next year with bells on. Randy's Restaurant has an excellent fish fry on Fridays (all you can eat), and after a hard day on hard water it was delicious. The temps were so warm that we fished for a couple hours mid-day in our tee shirts. All of the gill that were caught were 8 to 9 and a half inches and the crappie were all 10 to 12 with one 13.

I had a great time.

My buddies and I have been making a trip like this every march since 91. In the past it has always been to Cadillac. This is our first trip to Houghton and we loved it.

Give it a try sometime.

Thanks for listening.

:)

I fished the south weed beed Sunday morning out from the limber and caught a variey of fish. 1 large gill,1 perch(10 incher),1 huge smallmouth(18 incher), couple largmouths, and about 20 pike(no keepers). We turned all fish back.

You certainly can catch a variety of fish at Houghton Lake. It is the one consitant lake that you can go to and always catch some fish through the ice, hammer handle pike at least. I was there with young kids and they love fishing that area, because of the good pike action.

Im heading back up Thursday morning for 2 days of hard fishing over my spring break. They are calling for snow, hopefully the fish will be biting cause im ready to catch some fish.
