I saw a gentlemen at the BIrch Run gander show a few weeks back and he had a rig I thought he called it ripping for walleyes.

Basically it was a wood stick with line wrapped around it, a lure tied in line with a lead weight on the end. He said allot of fishermen are using this rig on the St. Clair river.

I am doing a presentation on different fishing methods and I would like to have a picture or get a copy of this rig.

Anyone know what I am talking about and can anyone help me out with a picture here?

What the man was referring to is usually called whipping-----
the old timers used the wood method but a lot of guys
today use short, stout rods and reels. The end result
is a little like handlining but you have something other
than line/wire in your hand (rod?).
LOL I guess the downriver boys just have tougher hands
than the boys off Harsens and Algonac!
Seriously though, it is a little different as you can anchor
the boat and feed line out a little at a time to thoroughly
work the lure thru good holding areas.

the method you are refering to is not whipping. it is called chugging.i used to chug the middle channel. 25 pound test wrapped arround a stick. a 2 ounce pencil sinker with a trebble hook on a string tied to a hole thru the lower half of the sinker like a j plug hook.we used to rubber band a minnow sideways on the trebble and lower it to bottom near the san souchi bar in 25-40 foot of water.i have also done this near peach island in the detroit river the channel.jig the sinker hard and the walleye will almost rip the stick out of your hand.it works good for agressive fish when you are drifting and lack good boat control.there many more modern jigging techniques that work better with the use of trolling motors and lighter jigs.it reminds me of either jigging spoons (which work well in deep water in fall for large fish) or blade baits where the larger agressive fish cant stand it and will slam a lure.i still have a couple chugging rigs here tied on stout 4-5 foot rods with 40 pound braided line instead of a 1 foot stick. i am the only person using this rig that i know of and will use it occasionally when the current is fast and i cant get to a pocket of fish with the trolling motor.look up whipping in a search of this site. its basically stationary handlining with lighter tackle.you should see the new rigs i'm using for trolling the river this spring. it combines handlining , bouncing , and plugging.i expermented a bit last fall and its amazing. big fish in dirty water.problem was keeping the muskies off.trying to keep it quiet until the tournaments are over.

Yup, we used to call it Chugging also ... just as Double Trouble describes. I saw Chugging sticks at Gander in the GR area a month or so back. I was kind of shocked, as the only place I had ever seen them before was over on the east side ... from Port Huron down to Lake Erie. Kind of the same with Pencil Plugs, we do not see them over here on the other side of the state.

Yup, the 2 previous guys are right. Its called "chugging". I don't have a pic, I use a short 2-3ft rod with a reel to do the same thing.

Parsons ..... Thank you very much.

If possible be sure to include in the pic the rod, line and set-up (bait).

That would be very benificial to me presentation.

BTW my e-mail is in my signature.
